Title: Painting effects pedals?!
Post by: Mr Ed on October 19, 2007, 01:00:33 PM
Afternoon all.

I've ordered a pre-assembled boutique phaser kit (http://www.buildyourownclone.com/phaser.html) from BYOC.

As standard, they all come as just empty, blank cases like THIS (below) and so I planned to paint or it spray it or something.

I'm thinking a really horrid garish electric pink but what type of paint? Spraypaint? Just pop to B&Q and get a small tester pot of somethingorother? What in the way of sealant to stop it chipping and getting $%&#ed?

Many thanks. :)

Wet and dry sandpaper the box
Spray primer from Halfords (a few coats)
Wet and dry again
Spray colour paint from Halfords  (a few coats)
Wet and dry again
Clear lacquer from Halfords (Two coats)
Job done

Worked for me!

I think we have a winner on the colour:

He he I send my pedals to Pedals Parts Plus in the USA and they paint them for me...for $8 plus postage...saves a lot of hassle.

Some examples of one they did for me. (http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m14/ved1980/CIMG2176.jpg)

I hate finishing enclosures.

3M do a multi pack of wet/dry sand paper and 400 grade / 600 grade and 1000 grade. Thats very handy.

That sounds proper good. I'll check them photos when I get home, I'm in work at the mo and the hosting site is blocked by the proxy.

also whilst i've remembered if you can use the same brand primer as spray paint and thoroughly clean the enclosure before spraying. Oil residue can often stick so wash it down with warm soap water before spray painting (metal coat hangers are good too for holding on to your pedal- bend ito shape and feed through the in jack and 9v holes).

i have done some byoc kits.  the first one i just sprayed quickly with a couple of coats - as you would expect most of it has chipped off round the edges and i dont use it much!!  I knew that would happen though and aint really too bothered

if you want it to stay looking neat you need to follow a finishing schedule like twinfan posted.

I'm interested in this BYOC thing, I'm pretty good with a soldering iron and I'm the mutt's nuts at working out how stuff work...

What's the shipping and stuff like to the UK? And what's the overall cost like?

There is a uk distributor

http://www.vibe-o-tronic.siliq.net/products.php?brand=1&type=1

the pedals sound pretty damn good and there is a helpfull forum at the main byoc site.

The prices for the kits are ridiculous when you look at the potential quality! It's just... WOW!!

 :D

If this goes well, I'm after a Mighty Mouse and a Flanger too when they're released.

I'll definately take Twinfans advise on board and treat it properly, I dont want it to look too cr@ppy.

Thanks again guys, appreciated!

I quite like how nerdy the printed labels look! Although I am still debating just applying the various coats of paint and then, before sealing, writing stuff on with a sharpie. GHETTO!!

Think I'll get a OD type pedal when I get my Blues Jr. Possibly just a Mighty Mouse. Any bands that used a good old Rat type distortion? Can't say I'm familiar with the sound.

I bought a load of stuff from BYOC a couple of years ago, the phaser is awesome, the digital delay is pretty good too.  You do need to be a bit careful with these effects thought, they are are True bypass, and if you dont have a buffer in the chain they can be really tempremental.

I painted mine glow in the dark green, and lacquered over a print I got off ebay.  Even if you do a great job 6 months of giging Will have it looking battle scarred in no time.

You should also try out generalguitargadgets.com, ive built at least ten of their pedals and they are great too.

First Foo Fighters record was recorded using an original vintage Rat. It's a great pedal for mixing between overdrive, distortion and harsh fuzz - the Keeley mods make a massive difference.

I think Nuno used a Rat on most of the early Extreme recordings.

has anyone tried screen printing text onto their boxes or is there a better way?

Screen printing is expensive and only worth it if you're a pedal builder aiming to sell your wares.

Most DIYers use waterslide decals.

One method easier than screen printing and water slides

Iron on Tshirt transfers, use the version designed for dark material so you can get a white background. A lot of the diy folks use them

I would post some links but I have just switched jobs (moved 400 miles closer to home in the process) and I havn't had time to get my work machine setup as I want it.

Couple of hints,

for metallic use black primer
For pearlescent finishes, white primer gives a pastel shade, black primer a deeper finish.
For binary (flip) colours use no more than 2 thin coats.

Createx make a gloss black acrylic that you can bake onto the pedal, this gives an excellent base for spray and airbrush work
