Title: Best Cab for a GH100L? And Distortion/Overdrive Pedal?
Post by: ChrisMetal on October 20, 2007, 10:43:20 PM
Hi guys, well now I've got a decent Valve head (LANEY GH100L) I was wondering on recommendations on a really good cab to go with it. I was thinking about getting the Laney 320watt ones, but i don't know if this the best route to go. I know that a lot of the bigger metal bands such as Metallica and Magadeth seem to favour the Celeston Vintage 30's(think thats right) speaker cabs but Laneys don't come with those as far as i know.

Also pedal wise, Distortion/Overdrive. What are peoples general view on the best for this type of amp.

All help is much appreciated:P

I use a 2x12 loaded with G12Hs with my Gh50l and it sounds awesome - could perhaps use some more upper mids, so I may go for a V30 eventually, but for now its good enough - depends what kinda sound you're after I guess. I prefer the upper middy sound of marshalls which is why I'd go for a v30.

I found that an Ibanez tube screamer of some sort works well with Laneys. I use a Boss SD-1 myself but ideally I would like the keeley modded tubescreamer I used to own (had to sell).

As for cabs I really liked the sound of the JCM800 cabs with my VH100.

I heard that Laney GH100L's and stuff go really well with their matching cabs,  so i would go for that.

The Digitech Bad Monkey is a great pedal if you are on a budget.

I also like the Boss SD-1 for a more "british" sound (i.e. aggressive mids).

Other than there are dozens of great pedals out there but some of them are really pricey.

I already have a Boss OD-3 and a CS-3 compressor sitting here not ever been used... Maybe come in handy do you think?

A Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble aswell and a Cry Baby Wah. So what goes through the effects loop?

Just the chorus?

Send-->-->-->CE-5 input---CE-5 ouput-->-->-->Return?

Time based effects go in the loop e.g delays, phasers, flangers, chorus etc. Overdrives, distortions, wahs go into the input. Although you can run it all into the input with the time based effects last in the chain, this is what people did before loops were invented.

I have a Laney GS412IA cab but I changed out the speakers to a mix of vintage 30s and G12H30s. The Seventy 80s that come stock in the GS cabs are good but not great, the response is kinda flat and lacking in punch, maybe because they are very light. I recommend you go for the TT412 cab if you want to go for a Laney cab.

Construction-wise, my cab seems good quality as far as materials are concerned, but inside the cab the nuts and bolts were rather loose and there was a few screws that were sticking out :x

For OD/Dist I think a clean boost and an EQ in the loop would be better than an overdrive pedal. I use the Zoom PD01 with the output full but gain all the way down. It's not transparent but it doesn't colour the sound anywhere near as other ODs. It has treble and bass controls too. I think Digitech Bad Monkey would be good too but I haven't tried one.
