Just put my Rebel Yell back in my strat and love the sound :D It has so many mids and sounds really fat, meaning the lead tones are awesome. Rhythm tones can sound a bit honky probably due to it having so much mids but I'm guessing it'll probably fit in fine in a band/mix. Anyway heres a photo, I'll do a clip tomorrow!

edit - just added a new clip. Mostly using the singlecoils in my strat but I used the rebel yell for the solo bit toward the end :)

Sexy, my HSS strat should be finished by tomorrow, I hope...

If I remember right thats the one that you're getting a Holy Diver for? Not sure if I'd want any more bass/thickness than this Rebel has, it'd be too much for me I think. Then again I am using 250k pots, would a 500k volume pot (not using a tone with the bridge pickup) make it sound a bit thinner?
This pickup sounds so much different to how it did in my Charvel - in that it was ok but a bit scooped sounding and fizzy, and in this its fat, middy and really crunchy - I remember people describing the RY as punchy and thats just what it is. Just goes to show that the guitar itself is more important than the pickup, obviously had a bad piece of basswood in the Charvel, and a good piece of ash in my strat :)

Looks excellent, an unusual burst for sure. Mine will be an inverted version of yours, almost.
Yeah my strat will have a Holydiver in the bridge, I want something meaty. And a Slowhand in the neck. Tim recommended 500k pots, I don't know how it will sound though. Pickup was dead when in my guitar though, sent it off to Tim and he said it's working fine... Very odd.
-
Yeah I was thinking of getting some neck and middle slowhands as the BGs I have in right now sound too tame compared to the RY which is just a rock machine (sorry for the cheesiness of those last few words  ). I'm home from uni now so can get that strat size p90 sent off sometime this week if you still want to give it a go.
As for the colour, I really like it as well :) Havent seen many other strats like it, apparently called sienna burst or something but Fenders sienna bursts look a bit different to this, less red I think.

Don't even try to put 500K pots in your strat with the Rebel Yell pickup...
-
I might have a look for a 300k CTS, hopefully axesrus will sell them. I thought this pickup would be too trebly and thin in a strat but it really isnt.

It's great to hear the RY works well for your strat and I bet it sounds awesome :)
CTS 300K would be really fine.

The RY is quite trebly by nature, so I think you're doing a fine job by using a 250K pot instead of 500K.
500K would be definately too harsh, thin and trebly. I only want to give you some advice since I've had the Rebel Yells myself (in a LP). Even in the Les Paul 500K was a bit too trebly (especially for the bridge pickup), so I guess 500k would be far too much for a Strat.
You can always try 300K and honestly I think that would be a perfect compromise :D
I find 500k pots fine in my strat with holydiver bridge.

NICE:)

gahh this is so annoying. I cant seem to get a decent recorded tone today. It all sounds so scooped and fizzy :( Sounds pretty good in the room though, I think my mic'ing has just gone to cr@p :\ will try recording with my LP soon to see if its just the guitar.
edit - yep, sounds like my micing technique has gone shite :( Heres a clip comparing my LP and strat (LP first).

Strat sounds a bit louder but not much difference in tone really when you compare the 2! Sounds like theres way too much gain on the clip because of the fizz but its fine in the room :\
I still dont find this strat as nice to play as my LP, I think I've got so used to the angled bridge/neck on a Les Paul after it being my only guitar for about 3-4 years that anything like a strat with flat bridge/neck just feels weird and I cant pick properly on it, so once again I'm reconsidering myself even owning a strat, despite liking how it sounds :?
-
Well that was possibly the shortest "honeymoon" period I've ever had with guitar gear   Playing loads today and it sounds good for leads, but the rhythm tones are more important to me and I'm allready getting a bit annoyed with its rhythm tone  I'm actually just thinking about going back to SSS with my BG v60 pickups then getting an SD pickup booster or something to thicken things up.

Hi Tom - I know what you mean, things can get a bit too 'middly' and compressed which is ok for leads (although I still shy away personally), but really 'thins out' (in terms of richness) chord work. Might it help you to identify the types of sound you want and then what guitars/pickup options would work? Now I have my LP I am considering what I want form my 2 Strats to get the tonal pallet I would like...if you can get away without doing any rhythm chord work on the Strat (as its covered elsewhere) but would really make use of the lead sound then keep the Humbucker... or I guess you might try parallel wiring to give a more single coil sound?
Soundclip sounded good - I liked the feel you had going...If I may be so bold as to critique it a tad - change the drum reverb to a room setting, so you get more ambient 'snap' on it. I would also pan the main rhythm part over to the left, especially when lead comes in to give it some space to 'breath' in. Sounding good though fella :)
-
I always find that I seem to over-reverb things for most peoples tastes, I just like the way it sounds for some reason  Really need to stop doing that.
I have a problem with using the guitar just for lead work - I like my guitars to be able to do good leads and rhythms, not just one or the other - you cant just switch guitars halfway through a song for a solo, except when you're recording! Was thinking about just getting another Mule for this guitar as I know roughly how its likely to sound, just like my LP but brighter I'm guessing. I'm not a fan of having guitars with radically different humbucker tones for some reason, I like not having to change the settings too much when changing guitars.

Trust me..try it, give it a few listens :) the problem with reverb is that it sounds fantastic in isolation but if youve got a 2s reverb tail on a snare drum (for instance), that is basically white noise in the background for half a bar, hence used on a lot of slow ballad type thingies where not a lot happens in that 2 seconds. This will allow the reverb on the guitar room so that will sound better :)
I know its a pain, but have you tried putting the mule into the strat? my strat is actually a lot darker than my LP, so always worth testing if you can...
-
Ok I got rid of the reverb and just adjusted the mix on Ez Drummer so that more of the "room" mic was in, I think it sounds a bit better :) Also changed the panning like you said.

I dont really want to take apart my LP as I hate fiddling about in it, soldering in the rear routed cavity bit is always a pain in the arse for me, much easier to work on a scratchplate!
edit - I was just playing around for a bit and got an awesome tone on position 4 (middle + rebel yell together - no coil splitting here!). Heres a clip of it at low volume, its how I wanted a bridge singlecoil to sound!

Is that by any chance similar to a tele bridge pickup? Its sort of how I imagine them to be like, tho I may be totally wrong?
Oh, and woogie reckons I should get a Holy Diver for my strat. Do you reckon this would still be too modern/high output for me?
-
Ah EZ Drummer - should have recognised it, an excellent piece of 'kit' :)
Unfortunately can't listen to clips at mo, but will do so as soon as possible, interested to hear difference.
Regarding the selector, I'm sure the more technically savvy guys will correct me if I'm mistaken but that is the bridge in parallel with the middle pickup but out of phase - you could wire the coils of the bridge pickup in parallel (or via switch) if you have 4 connector cable, which would give a more single coil like sound, then would be very flexible setup... No experience of HD, only the Crawler which I am very happy with - I have posted some clips up using it through my JCM800 if you wanted to hear it for an idea...
-
Yeah I have tried the splitting thing in the past and never liked it, it always sounds way too thin in position 4 for me.
I've heard your clips and they sounded good to me :) Apparently the Crawler is like a hotter, darker Mule (I think thats the description someone gave once), so I'd probably like it. Just wondering, what woods are your strats made from? Mine has a maple neck (rosewood board) and an ash body.
-
Hey Tom - sounding much better (ok I'm biased there!) another thing you could do is use the second rhythm track to add layers in later - start with just one rhythm and the lead, then bring in the second rhythm later giving the tune a nice kick along the way, and maybe change the drum pattern at the same time to add some interest... just some thoughts :)
Maybe for you having a micro switch for the bridge pickup that selects between serial, parallel and single coil could be the most versatile answer giving a lot of options from 1 pickup.
I believe that the Crawler is a hot but still 'PAF' style pickup (I specifically didn't want anything that accentuated the mids) . My Strat has a birds eye maple neck with rosewood board...but I cannot for the life of me remember what the body is - it's feckin' heavy and have a suspicion it may be swamp ash but not sure, sorry not much help there!
-
That clip was really just a really rough demo showing some of the sounds I can get with my strat, not really a proper track as such which is why the structure isnt amazing.
Still havent decided what I'm gonna do with my strat yet. I think the Crawler would probably work well. Just need to find someone to buy my RY!
