Pickups / Re: Dimarzio Transition equivalents
« Last post by timmy_pix on February 27, 2025, 03:35:28 PM »
If the Transition is the sound you want, then that's what I'd go for. Can't say I've ever encountered one, but Dimarzio generally voice their pickups quite differently to BKP.

The closest, on paper at least, would probably be the Unity, judging by the EQ curve, albeit wound hotter. Reading about the Transition suggests it's clear, balanced, a bit darker - BKP don't really do darker-voiced pickups until you're getting higher output. Maybe a mag-swapped True Grit? But Dimarzio do a lot of different ceramic-based designs and definitely have their own thing going on.  Cheaper too, so spending BKP money on a bit of a stab in the dark is a risk.

Alternatively, I'd contact BKP, reference the tones you're after without getting hung up on the specs of the Transition and see what they recommend to get you in that ballpark.

Pickups / Dimarzio Transition equivalents
« Last post by fentonwinmill on February 25, 2025, 11:57:29 AM »
I've always wanted the pink sparkly Music Man Luke, but they are as rare as hens teeth, but
Sterling have it in their range and is widely available, but for some reason they have outfitted
it with black hardware which looks Rubbish.
So was thinking of getting the Sterling and upgrading the pickups/trem (Wilkinson Ws1300)/Tuners.

What would the BK equivalent be to the Dimarzio Transition pickups Steve used to use?

Pickups / Nomad compared to flat 50 bridge
« Last post by cuttingEdge on February 23, 2025, 07:17:11 PM »
Hi there,

long time bare knuckle user. i have my hit and miss(es) (the BOSS) with this brand but thank god the ratio is towards hits.
I have my mood swings, but the riff raff never disappoints!

nomad vs. Flat 50:
one has A3 the other A5. One a copper plated steel baseplate the other a zink plated one.
Same thickness? Both AWG43  probably AWG43 and similiar turn count i guess, looking at the DCR.
...

Anyway, i am interested what the sonic differences are!

Both of the options that you mentioned there will do great in that guitar, but, if you're considering a P90, absolutely consider the Blue Note too - its smoother midrange and clear chime suit this kind of guitar down to the ground and would create a really nice balance with the PolyPaf. Glad you're enjoying your bridge humbucker so much!

Pickups / Reverend Airsonic pickup suggestions
« Last post by fivestarhibernacle on January 12, 2025, 07:11:50 PM »
I recently put a Polypaf in the bridge of a Reverend Airsonic W which sounds absolutely amazing. The guitar has: a very unique body style with a thick center block but thinner wings with F-hole type cutouts that go all the way through, a bolt on neck, and a bass roll off tone control in addition to the typical treble tone control. I can't say for sure how the body style is supposed to affect the tone, but according to Reverend it is supposed to lend both the long sustain of a solid body and resonances typical of a semi hollow body. The neck pickup currently in it is a hum cancelling P90 style pickup which in comparison to the new Polypaf leaves much to be desired.

Looking for any recommendations for a neck pickup that would balance well with the Polypaf bridge and do tones ranging from indie style ambient cleans, the solo to Another Brick in the Wall, to All Then Witches fuzz tones, to modern style high gain leads. Currently I'm between just the matching Polypaf neck humbucker and Mississippi Queen HSP90, but wondering if anyone else has had success mixing and matching with another type of pickup in the neck position with Polypaf bridge.

TIA for any advice. Can't recommend the Polypaf bridge highly enough for anyone else on the fence about it (if anyone wasn't already instantly sold from the demo vids out there).

Thanks for the response, I didn't have the Ragnaroks on my radar at all. I went with those now!

Although the Polymath can certainly handle those genres of music, it's by no means in the higher output portion of our humbucker range, sitting definitely in the medium output arena, as well as having a deliberately round and mellow low end feel which I don't think falls in line with the tight clear lows that you're describing. In fact, it sounds like a ceramic pickup will be a much better option for what you're asking for. Something like the Ragnarok would do a better job of giving you a stronger output, full, roaring mids and a tight response in the lows to keep those faster riffs clear and accurate. If you want a similar feel but a little more brightness in the highs and upper mids, the Unity would also be a great option.
