Pickups / Re: Black Dog in a mid heavy guitar? Looking for Hot Paf
« Last post by timmy_b on December 20, 2024, 01:54:43 PM »
The Black Dog does have a fairly strong midrange, so it will tend bring out those more prominent frequencies that you are hearing from your guitar, rather than balance against them - if that's what you're aiming for, to highlight those characteristics in a harmonious way, then that could certainly work great. If you are looking for more of a balance, check out the VHII, which has a much more smooth response in the mids and a little more brightness, which can balance nicely with a more throaty, mid-heavy guitar.

Pickups / Black Dog in a mid heavy guitar? Looking for Hot Paf
« Last post by Ic3Ang3l on December 15, 2024, 03:14:22 PM »
Hi Guys,

I am looking for a "hot paf" kind of pickup. The Guitar has a black limba Body and a bolt on maple neck with rosewood board. Two Humbuckers and Wraparound! Fender Scale. Think of it like "Novo" Serus Style guitar.

The guitar is sounding slightly middy. Not that honky mid thing, just a good mid to low mid thing.

Would the Black Dog a good fit for this guitar? I am mostly playing something in vein of Clutch, Rival Sons. Think of Blues Rock, Heavy Rock, non drop tuned Stoner.

I like my Bridge PU slightly hotter than the neck.

Pickups / Re: Yet another pickup recommendation for a baritone guitar
« Last post by rcuthriell on December 01, 2024, 10:47:25 PM »
Replying back to a very old post... I'm looking to update the stock pickups in a PRS SE 277 baritone. I'm considering the Black Hawks, Silos, and because of this thread the Black Dogs. Can anyone provide any new updates for recommendations? I want to go maybe drop A in the baritone, nothing too low but I want solid bass, good meds and highs they aren't brittle or too harsh. Well balanced chug that cleans up nice too. I have to say the stock 85/15s pickups have insanely good clean tone in the PRS—I just don't have the full weight I want in the bass and mids. The 85/15s pick ups are good for rock and the can get heavy with a lot of push but I want a growl that can be tamed if needed from this baritone!

Pickups / Question regarding Impulse VS Juggernaut (Aristides 070)
« Last post by Yzen on November 18, 2024, 07:03:44 PM »
Hi all,

I am finalizing an Aristides 070 build and I am still torn between the impulse and juggernaut pickups. The 070 will probably be tuned down to around drop F#/G/G#, so pretty low. I tried some bareknuckle pickups and I guess I'll like most of them but never really had a chance to test the impulse and juggernauts. I was listening to many samples and videos of both pickups and I really love the sound of both from hearing other people play them. Reading the specs and also from samples I heard I know the juggernauts have more pronounced mids and sound a bit more agressive compared to the rather flat impulse pickups. I still think the impulse have a very nice rounded sound to them over the whole frequency spectrum but probably less chunk and "djent-capabilities". If I am not mistaken I guess the impulse would probably be a bit better suited for the really low drop F# tunings to stay clear.

So I like the chunky agressive sound of the juggernauts, but I fear they'll sound a bit muddier compared to the impulse at the low end. At the moment I really love the tone from Mike Stringer, I think he uses m7's and fishmans..

What would you guys recommend between juggs and impulse, or even something else?

cheers

Pickups / Re: Pickup recommendations for Mayones Regius
« Last post by ericsabbath on November 11, 2024, 07:22:11 PM »
One last update for posterity or in case anyone is having a similar issue with their Regius, but...I never could get this guitar to sound right.  I tried a few different Suhr pickups also, but was never happy (except with the SSV neck pickup).  I was never quite happy with the Bare Knuckles I tried, either.  I went through honeymoon phases with all of them, they all did some things well and not other things, etc.

Anyway I almost sold the guitar, but this past summer I listened to this little voice in my head that I've had forever telling me to try Black Dogs.  I got a set of used Black Dogs, and oh my God, I almost cried!  After about three years of loving how the guitar played but not liking the sound very much, these are it.  They're just fantastic pickups to me.  The neck is actually very similar to the Suhr SSV that I love so much, but honestly I might like the Black Dog neck better.  The bridge Black Dog is just fantastic in the Regius, it's got a great EQ, I don't feel like anything is missing or any frequency range is too prominent, nothing like that.  The cleans are beautiful and it gains up incredibly well.  When I play Alice in Chains (say, Man in the Box), there is this "hum" or "waahm" kind of sound as you hover your hands near the muted strings that I need to have, it's a little hard to explain, but it always means that palm muts or harmonics are going to sound great.

I don't want to write too much, but after years of frustration I genuinely nearly cried when trying the Black Dogs, they are that good to me!

I don't know why it took me so long to try them.  Looking back, I guess I thought that I needed a higher output pickup, even though I'm really used to PAF-types in Les Paul.  Maybe because I didn't love the Suhr SSV or SSV+ bridge pickups I didn't think that an A5 pickup in this output range would work, but the Black Dog just nails it for me.  Extremely versatile, cleans are about as good as any Les Paul and the distortion just growls beautifully and articulately.  A similar EQ to the Holy Diver maybe, but hardly compressed and with more highs.  Surprisingly I find the Black Dog to be different than the True Grit bridge, the TG is kind of raspy/grainy/gritty to me (kind of like the Nailbomb) whereas the Black Dog just sounds like a damn good, hard rocking Les Paul.  I finally got that "modernized, beefed up" Les Paul type of sound that I was after originally.

Anyway cheers all!  I wish that it wasn't so hard to get the right pickups sometime, but when you do the result can be amazing.

Nice to hear you finally found your pups 👏🏿😍

Pickups / Re: Which pick ups did I buy?

I've just replied to your post in the Facebook group, but I wouldn't trust that those are genuine BKP at all. One baseplate is missing mounting screws and the other isn't drilled for a double screw-pole pickup, so it's been taken off another one.

It really looks like someone's at the very least disassembled some Bare Knuckles and reused the baseplates, or had them rewound or repaired... email Bare Knuckle directly, get their view, and then use that as evidence in a dispute with the seller if you can.
