i was talking about a peice of wood with a hole in the middle thats job is to stop the pickup going any other way than what you want it to.  But there are many things you can try - the simplest would be to add some pickup sponges to the back edge of the humbucker to push that side up .

Whatever you end up doing it will take a bit of trial and error to get the height and tilt right!

i just went out and bought some. haven't put them on yet, forgot i'd have to take off the pickguard and i don't have new strings yet, so i'll wait for that. I also forgot that the pickup rings are supposed to be screwed in... do you think just the two pickup screws will hold them in place well enough, or should i drill them in? obviously i'm going to make sure they fit first.

ok, tried the rings, they didn't fit. They pushed out the screws so that i couldn't get them to go back into the pickup.

So, while at work i was putting together some engine hose kits, and thought about what (Philly?) said about fender tubing instead of springs. So i took some solid rubber hose and tried that out. I cut about a 4-5 mm length for each screw with a big angle in it. it works absolutely perfectly. The pickups sit more solidly than with screws and i can literally angle them anyway i want. at first i actually angled them back too much. They're now sitting perfectly. I highly recommend this to anyone with pickup angling problems. If anyone would like, i'll try to get a picture of what they look like now and the tubing i used in case you don't know what i'm talking about.

yeah, take a picture of what you used.  I use surgical tubing most of the time for the rings but must confess i never considered cutting it on an angle before

damn well i don't have a camera i can use right now, maybe tomorrow. anyway, its a much thicker tubing. its just under a centimeter in diameter and made of like a tire rubber so once it gets pressed up against the pickguard it won't allow for any movement. i basically combined phillys idea of the tubing and wes's idea of the wooden thing. so thanks to both.
