Gibson Firebird mini-humbucker replacement ?
« on: November 18, 2007, 09:21:42 AM »
I know Tim makes a mini-humbucker ala Les Paul Deluxe stylee but i was wondering if he does a replacement for the Firebird style mini-humbucker ?

I'm not even sure if the LP Deluxe and the Firebird deluxe mini HB's are even the same size. Anyone know ?

My other question is,providing the BKP mini HB's fit in a Firebird, what is the most powerful pickup that Tim can build into one of those housings ?

If it wasn't a particularly nice Firebird i'd just route it and put a full size Warpig in there but it's way too nice for that and i'll probably want to sell it one day.

The Firebird and Deluxe mini-HBs are the same size, so no problems there.

I don't know if BKP actually make Firebird pickups, but Tim could definitely rewind your Gibson(?) ones for you.

As for how powerful it can be, I know Duncan's SM-2 Custom mini-HB is about 16K, but I have one and it doesn't sound particularly powerful (or good for that matter!).  There must be limits due to the small size of the coils.

I'd ask Tim and see what he thinks.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Maybe he could do you a single coil. He could take an oversized bobbin with a larger magnet and wind it to beyond Uber Sinner proportions. You'd get hum but you'd get the same, if not more, output as a warpig. Downside is the problem of where he'd get the bobbin and the core magnet from though.
He could possibly shave off a P-90 magnet. Treat it as an 'experiment'
I too use chicken as a measurement.

I love Firebirds but the stocks pickups are generally way too thin for me.  Mine was a '91 'bird and was screetchy as hell, sold it after a few months due to the lack of replacement pickups on the market.

I tried a modern Firebird in Denmark Street a year or two back and it was MUCH nicer than the one I had - much fatter and better made overall.

How old is yours? (i.e. what year)
