Which pickups for HSS guitar?
« on: November 29, 2007, 10:44:58 AM »
Hi,

I have a Carvin DC135C which has a mahogany body, maple (+2 mahgany strips) nack with an ebony fingerboard and a floyd rose tremolo.
The pickups configuration is H/S/S and im looking to replace them as the stock pickups are not so good...

I play anything from Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold or Alter Bridge to Muse / Radiohead (my band plays that type of stuff) and also a bit of Jazz Fusion and Blues... so i need something pretty versatile...

I was looking at the Mriacle Man in the bridge but im not sure about what to put in the neck and middle...  i use the neck pickup mostly for smooth, jazz fusioin stuff so i need it to be able to cope with compressed (i guess high gain) sounds.... ie. the neck is for smooth, liquidy, legato sounding stuff (think Shawn Lane/ Alan Holdsworth/ Guthrie Govan)

Any ideas?

If you really want the Miracle Man, then I'd go for the hottest single coil - the Trilogy.  There's also the Sinner, but I think that's more of a bridge pickup.

However I would suggest maybe a Nailbomb - Irish Tour - Irish Tour set would be more versatile for you?  The Miracle Man bridge will do the Metallica thing very well but he Alnico NB would be a better allrounder (from what I've read).  Matt Bellamy is a Nailbomb fan for example.

( Edit - just checked the HSS sets on the online shop and they match the buckers/singles as I have suggested.  I must be getting to know the product range well  ;) )

Ah, ok, i'll take a look at the nailbomb and the irish tours - are the single coils hot enough though? Im just worried they dont have a high enough output to cope with smooth legato stuff...

I seem to recall Tim mentioning that he managed to wind a single coil to 30k.... or something nearby... without it turning ghastly.

So if you're worried about the single couls not cutting the mustard... well... you can just ask Tim to wind it up a bit more  ;)

EDIT: For spelling. Damn cr@ppy keyboards at work.
BKP guitars:
Epiphone Dot Studio (NB bridge, MQ neck)
Gibson LP Studio (MM bridge, CS neck)

Ah, that sound like a good idea.... will winding it up more give it more of a humbucking sound?

personally i find the irish tours in a Nailbomb HSS set are nowhere near hot enough to keep up.

I'd go with the Miracle Man/Trilogy set.

Well, i PMed Tim and he said he could do a Nailbomb/Trilogy/Trilogy set for me and wind up the Trilogys to 21k - do you reckon that would work?

I suppose if all else fails i could fall back on Dimarzio mini humbuckers! Or not haha....
