BlackDogs in bridge, MQin neck => a good match?
« on: January 20, 2008, 10:17:30 AM »
Neck pickups are never transparent enough for my taste, and it's very rare that I actually use the neck pickup for rhythm (as it says on the switcher label) or even use it at all.

Was wondering what's the better neck option for a BlackDogged Edwards: a MQ or a maybe better a Stormy Monday?

I've got an AIV Stormy with an AIV Mule in a Les Paul.  I have two Mules in another guitar and the neck pickup can be really thick - nice sometimes, but not always.

The AIV Mule is a clearer more acoustic option.  I like it a lot.

Thanks man.

But just to make sure, do you mean the Stormy or the Mule being the clearer, more acoustic one?

Sorry Hunter - the SM is the clearer. more acoustic tone.  It's doesn't fatten up as much as a Mule.

I've got an AII SM with a BD bridge and find the neck overly bright.  Or maybe the bridge is overly dark.  Whatever.

I've discussed this before with Dave on another thread, and we reckon his AIV SM probably has a bit more clarity again than my AII.

So AIV SM could be just what you're looking for!  :)
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds

Thanks all (SM was what I thought of anyways) - but has anyone tried to pair the MQ with a vintage hot humbucker?

If youre going to pair it with a Blackdog i think the Mule AIV neck wont be too thick, actually i think it will be perfect.

Anyway i think you should just get the Mule set, youve suffered ULTIMATE TONE DEPRIVATION for long enough now

EDIT: An alnico II SM will be less bright then an alnico IV SM, so if the II SM is overly bright when paired with a Blackdog (and i can imagine it is) then a IV SM will be even more so i think....

Jus remembered something, ive heard about the combo of AIV neck and AV bridge supposed to sound really awsome in the middle position by the way.
