Bridge humbucker for a Strat...?
« on: January 22, 2008, 01:14:11 AM »
Low to vintage output, to be coupled with vintage sounding single coils in the middle and neck. It needs to split well, not be too hot, some tightness on the low end, especially with gain, a powerful but not spiky midrange, cutting treble...

NO midspike a la JB, can't stand this...

It's to put in a Highway 1 Strat, Alder body, Rosewood board. That Strat is bright but not ear scorching bright. The bridge bucker would get its individual volume control.

Suggest any brands of course ;)

So far my favorite bucker would be the Duncan Jazz, bridge version. But I just want something a bit different.

Thanks guys!

From your description, Stormy Monday I guess.  Although for me personally I don't think I'd like the sound in a Strat.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Tried it, got loads of topics including 'pics of yourselves'    I'm looking for something specific enough to not show up on search much... sorry.

Neither the Jazz or the SM split very well, they're too low-output. I'd rather choose the VHII. The lows are tight and the highs are wide open. It's a bright sound full of character.

You could also try a Mississipi Queen - it's more rock & roll than vintage Strat singles but clearer than most humbuckers and packs more punch than a PAF.

A Mule

I have a BKP Mule in my Grosh "strat" (alder + rosewood board) -check it out on the guitar pics thread if you like. It's cream, F-spaced without covers and works very well indeed with single coils in the Apache, Sultan league ( I mix n match 'em).

I think the Mule would work great fro you. That split sound isn't for everybody though it's  little weak and somewhat trebly, it is the sound I use least on the guitar ( ok for some exotic occasions).  The split coil added to either the mid, neck or both though sounds just terrific, (as does the whole Mule added in this way).

With the tone rolled off somewhat I can get a huge, plummy  "stadium" solo sound but as you might equate this with a mid-spike you may not be interested in that "feature".

When I spoke to Tim about a bridge humbucker for an HSS strat, he suggested going for quite a hot pickup in order that when split, it is comparable to the single-coils in output.
His suggestion to me was a Crawler, and to have it wired so that it "auto-splits" when you combine it with the middle pickup in position 2.
