Aahh the joys of a JCM900's half-power switch. My 100W runs happily at 50W until such time as I need to kill someone and then I can unleash the afore-mentioned fury.

Someone around here said it cuts bass response :? I haven't noticed it, have you?

There are many a cool feature about the 900 though :)

If you take out two tubes out of a 100w 4 tube power stage you must set the output impendance accordingly. I have too look that up but it think you need to set it at 8 ohm when you play a 16 ohm load.

If you dont adjust the OT you will hear some nasty sh8t i guess.

Also many amps that can switch between 100w and 50w just decrease power to the speakers in some way, it never sounds as a 'real' 50w that way.

yeah, i think that's true (about the impedance).

sometimes they use pentode/triode (my engl does that) which isn't the same as a "true" 50 watter. that just disconnects some of the electrodes from the power valves or something like that. but all 4 power valves are still amplifying.

what i meant about the output transformer was much more basic though... the OTs in 50 watt amps are generally different than those in 100 watt amps... so the 100 watt amp won't sound the same as the 50 watter, even if run in 50 watt mode (and it's not pentode/triode and actually is two tubes "pulled").

I think. I know just enough about valves to be "dangerous"...

in marshalls at least, the whole amp runs at a slighter lower voltage internally with a 50w. this is certain to affect the sound too.

Yeah me too, i looked it up and i was right about the ohm setting on the amp, but you cant do this trick with all 100w amps, at least i think so. Probably all depends on what amp you have i guess.

Nope, I've never run it at 100W though but I wouldn't say the bass is unresponsive at all. I can hear it changing as I increase or decrease it, I'd call that responsive. :)
