2 single coils and a humbucker!
« on: August 22, 2005, 07:50:07 PM »
Hi ALL
Bit of advice required. I play in a covers band and use prodominatly two guitars. I have an epi lespaul which is great for that lush sustain (free all right now style) and a jackson Dinky DS2 ( the one with the add on gain switch).

Being a devonian and Bareknuckle come from my heartland I would like to upgrade my jackson Pickups. Now the problem is I need to balance the singles and the humbucker. My current scenario is that the hunbucker dont offer enough definitions and the single coils are a bit dead. The band stuff also plays alot of bluesy stuff so I need that startocaster sound with the singles with that bit extra ommph and sustain without losing defination.
Any suggestions- MUCH APPRECIATED. :)

Welcome! For the SCs I can whole-heartedly recommend Irish Tours. For the HB, the only pup I have experience with that's a 'non metal' pup is the  VHII, which is a stellar pup, and would probably match the ITs really well, but there are others that have a lot more experience with BKP than I do.

Sorry, not sure how familar you are with pickup jargon ...

SC = single coil
HB = humbucker
pup = pickup
BKP = Bare Knuckle Pickups

Welcome to the forum :D
For my money I'd go for the Crawler HSS set, this has a Geoff Whitehorn Crawler brudge humbucker which has a lovely fat and hot PAF tone coupled with 2 x Mother's Milk single coils for real '60s Strat tone.It's a great, versatile set that'll cover all your needs. 8)

Tim's usually right when it comes to this. But I really dig TO's suggestion too. The Crawler will get you a beefed up Strat tone and with the Mother's Milk singles, you'll have the same setup as Geoff's Strat style guitar. The VHII's seem to be made for super Strats like Jackson's. Might also go well with Trilogy singles for a more modern tone. Tuff call.

I think the VHII's are't going to deliver enough fat sustain in a Dinky hence my call on a Crawler which does have more lower mid push.The VHIIs, as we've heard in the players room, have a great focused tone with warm bottom end but you do have to work harder as the pickup is relatively low output(in the grand scheme of things). :)

Yer correct DK2FS it most certainly is...with all new pots coz the originals seemed to wareooot a bit quick and crackle.

Thanks for your updates- I do hope those nice people at bare knuckle have a demo guitar of the pick ups recommended at the guitar show in the NEC in November ( HINT)!.
cheers :roll:

Like the idea of the "crawler set" :lol:
