Blind Guardian - At The Edge Of Time 2010
« on: November 08, 2010, 11:32:57 AM »
Has anyone listened to the latest record of the Eropean Power Metal Emperors?

Personally I think that it is one great work 1000 times better than their last one and the first two tracks can be compared to the ones from "Imaginations...." or even "Nightfall..."

What is your opinion about that record?

If I find any time (I am very busy these days) I'll write a full review about each one of the tracks...

Feel free to write your opinions guys  :)

I think it's a good crossing point between the later style stuff from Myth and their more 'classic BG' material, Imaginations, Nightfall and Opera.

I've only listened to it a couple of times, though, as I was between jobs when it was released and will have to give it a dedicated listen sometime soon!

Well exactly as you said...the CD combines all the previous BG works ...you knbow it has symphononic elements in it but it's also harder and raw like the latest works of the band...

And everybody has to admit even if he doesn't like the recording that the band works reeeeaaally hard in the studio and they're always trying to do their best and this is a great advantage that only a few bands nowadays have...some others don't respect neither their fans nor themselves (a really good example is my favourite metal band, Iron Maiden, who have more than 20 years of history and their final -as it seems- album is very bad...)

I have written off Maiden and Priest as dead since they're obviously more interested in marketing than music these days. IMO, Blind Guardian are still HUNGRY and trying to push themselves!

I totally agree with you man...especially about Iron Maiden....they're probably the band with the most Best Of Compilation CDs and the most DVDs...their next realease will probably be titled "Maiden DVD: The Pre-Early Years" when Dave Murray barely knew how to speak and he couldn't even count the number of the guitar's strings...and this way the bands don't respect their names and history...they are doing the oposite

Well, yesterday being a holiday, I was actually HOME and I downloaded Edge of Time. I have since listened to it ... 5 times? Something like that.

This album is nothing short of A M A Z I N G. For BG, this is very stripped down, and it sounds less cluttered and a lot more full sounding. I'm not sure about the guitar tone in a few places, but overall the mix is superb. The new drummer is finally coming into his own and his playing is STUNNING on several tracks.

Favourite track? Hard to say. I'm leaning towards Valkyries, tho:

I love how the vox on that song recall his work in Demons & Wizards. In fact, the song is a great D&W/BG hybrid!!

By the end of this album you are just PUMMELED. I hear so many great little mixes of styles on this album, from thrash to Indian to romantic classical and epic fantasy. It's a great experience front to back.

I would venture to say that if you are NOT into Blind Guardian, but are looking for a great introduction into what they're about, THIS is the starting point, followed by Imaginations, Nightfall, and Opera.

The first track on this album is so mega epic, I find myself playing it over and over again. The live orchestra sounds GREAT, is superbly recorded, and well arranged.

BG really pulled their butts out of the fire from the muddy/dreary mush that was Myth (that album just sounds so tired and by-the-numbers to me, besides being over compressed to the point of being painful).

My favourite metal album of the year? Definitely in my Top 10!!

I've been listening to At The Edge Of Time on Spotify and starting to really enjoy it.  Some of the lyrics make me cringe a bit but I really like the vocals, the melodies, the mix of musical styles and just the overall sound of the album.

Interesting what you said about this album being a good starting point, because I confess I'm a total Blind Guardian noob (I think I heard some of their very early stuff, but it was far too 100mph for me).  I'll check out the other albums you mentioned.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Heeeyyy another one who likes "At The Edge Of Time"...I have to say that here in Greece it's a very big success and most of my friends consider it on the "2010 top metal albums"...well Philly, after you listen to "A.T.E.O.T." you should listen to "Nightfall In Middle-Earth" which is a concept record based on the great J.R.R. Tolkien's "Silmarilion" (I don't think I've spelt it right) and "Imaginations From The Other Side"...these two records are considered to be the best from their entire career so these along with their new album should be your starting point with the "European Power Metal Emperors" (that's how I call them  :D)

I'm off to buy tickets for their show in Atheeeeeeeeeeens!!!
