Well, yesterday being a holiday, I was actually HOME and I downloaded
Edge of Time. I have since listened to it ... 5 times? Something like that.
This album is nothing short of
A M A Z I N G. For BG, this is very stripped down, and it sounds less cluttered and a lot more full sounding. I'm not sure about the guitar tone in a few places, but overall the mix is superb. The new drummer is finally coming into his own and his playing is STUNNING on several tracks.
Favourite track? Hard to say. I'm leaning towards
Valkyries, tho:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBx9h-6vV4oI love how the vox on that song recall his work in
Demons & Wizards. In fact, the song is a great D&W/BG hybrid!!
By the end of this album you are just PUMMELED. I hear so many great little mixes of styles on this album, from thrash to Indian to romantic classical and epic fantasy. It's a great experience front to back.
I would venture to say that if you are NOT into Blind Guardian, but are looking for a great introduction into what they're about, THIS is the starting point, followed by
Imaginations, Nightfall, and
Opera.
The first track on this album is so mega epic, I find myself playing it over and over again. The live orchestra sounds GREAT, is superbly recorded, and well arranged.
BG really pulled their butts out of the fire from the muddy/dreary mush that was
Myth (that album just sounds so tired and by-the-numbers to me, besides being over compressed to the point of being painful).
My favourite metal album of the year? Definitely in my Top 10!!
BLIND GUARDIAN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
