Which BKP PUP is closest to Satriani's sound? Just bought surfing with an alien cd (which is long overdue) and i love the sound.

On Surfing, I believe he used dimarzio paf pro pickups and he still uses pickups that are of similar output, but more modern sounding that pafs. In BKP terms, that's a VHII. I think it would give you great Satchtones, depending on the guitar you're putting them in of course, and the rest of your rig.

Surfing was recorded before his Ibanez and DiMarzio endorsements. He used an ESP parts guitar , another painted parts guitar and a white Kramer Pacer all with various Seymour Duncan pups.
The Kramer had a Duncan JB in it and was used on any tracks that needed a whammy (so most of them then!), this guitar is known as the Satch Boogie guitar. I'm not sure about the whole 'old' versus 'new' JB pickup thing, and when the transition between the two was, but I'd say a Rebel Yell or (more likely) Holy Diver would be closest for that album.

I just found this on a PDF I downloaded from somewhere:

So perhaps a Rebel Yell for the 'old' JB tone?

I was wrong then.

I think there's a definite lack of bottom end on that album, which is not associated with the "old JB". Could just be down to how he tweaked his sound back then and the fuzzy Marshall factor.

I would say either a Holy Diver or Nailbomb would be perfect for that tone, especially if you are using a basswood guitar.

I've got a Nailbomb 7 in the Bridge of my Carvin DC727 and thru my JSX it sounds great for playing Satch.
I've found the Nailbomb to be  really versatile pickup. :D
