Just got a Pod XT Live. Now what? lol
« on: March 27, 2008, 12:03:51 AM »
I've been looking for something to record with so I picked this up from ebay.  What's the best way to go about it?  Do you guys/girls have any useful tips, hints, or tricks?  Or is there anything else I would need?  Normally I just record with an amp into a mic into the soundcard and I can't get a good recorded sound.

Also, is there a way to get the amp/fx models for free?  Like say if you had a friend with a Pod and you just wanted to swap or something.

Cheers

The way I used to record with my POD XTL was using Audacity (free recording software you can download). Just connected the POD via the USB and set it as the audio source in Audacity/control panel or something (can't remember precisely).

the only way you can really get them for free is as you said swap witha  friend but this is only the actual hardware as the addons are coded to the hardware.

with you having the xt live you already have the FX plugin.

and i dont know if they are still doing it but line6 were doing the packs at half price for customers with registered hardware.

Ok so I need a USB cable that will actually fit the Pod since the used one I got didn't come with it.  All the USB cables we have here at home don't fit.  Does it have to be the exact one for the Pod or is it just some standard one I can find at a shop?

I got the model pack issue figured out.  I did some research and it turns out you can use the model packs for GuitarPort with XT Live and they're half the price.  All I want is the Metal Shop and I'll be set so I guess I can part with the $25. :P

I only have the XT (not the Live), but it works on a standard USB A/B cable that you can buy at any electronics store. They look like:

There's nothing special about POD ones or anything :)

And the model packs are definitely worth it. They're way better than the standard amp types and stuff.

I never use the USB for recording. I just set the output mode to Studio Direct and then go from the Mono output straight into the line in on my sound card.

But then that's just me, heh.

Pod's are awesome bits of kit once you get used to them. I still haven't unleashed the full potential of mine, I guess I've not had a proper fiddle around with it yet.

I do all of my recording with my Pod, it's all I need for demo's and ideas. But nothing beats a real Amp in a proper studio if you want to do proper recording, so i am currently saving up for an Engl Powerball. (BTW, the Powerball modeler on the Pod sounds nothing like it, lol. Found that out to my dismay when I fiddled with it.)

What sort of amp are you plugging the pod into? Make sure to set your input type to match it by pressing the tuner button and choosing "dest".

Also, if you're plugging into a solid-state combo, think about putting it into the slave input, which'll cut out the combo's preamp stage and just have it act as a power amp. Depending on your amp you mightn't like the results, but I got better results by doing that :)

Actually I find it quite different. To me it's a very tight and smooth high gain tone but still with some crunch. It seems to work well for some Vai type tones. I guess it's all dependent on which cab it's used with and settings, how you are listening to it , etc.
I really like it, though the Soldano SLO model is my favourite by far.

You're right that it can be quite bassy if you turn everything up but try this:

Drive 30%, Bass 30%, Mid 65%, Treble 90%, Presence 70%
With a V-30 cab, 57 on axis mic and Screamer stomp; Drive 0%, Gain 40%, tone 70%.

With my nailbomb (currently in my RG550) it gives a tight, brightish thrashy tone.  Your Miracleman may need the EQ used to cut the bass and boost the mids to get closer to what I'm hearing.
