Abraxas for 7 string
« on: April 13, 2008, 04:26:45 AM »
High there guys. Been a while since i posted.

Ive currently got an Ibanez s7320, 22 fret Seven string guitar, thin as heck superstrat mahogany body, maple bolt on 25.5" scale, rosewood board.

Im about to heavily mod it, including a baritone neck at 28.625" which works out as a 2 fret extension of the neck. Im putting BKP's in it and lockign tuners as well as some other mods.

Actually, i just ordered a nailbomb 7 bridge for the guitar. :D
So the guitar will be downtuned a bit, which concerns me some with the neck pickup. having heard one now, i really really like the sound of the abraxas neck, but with the alnico 4 magnet, im a wee bit concerned about how it would handle the low notes. the low string is going to be a super low G#, think fretting a bass e string at the 4th. it might go down as low as e at times, but not too often. Keep in mind the extended scale length, in reality if i fret at fret 2, it will be the same as having a 25.5" guitar downtuned one semitone. im mainly looking for the hotter singing leads that come out of the abraxas. Im not horribly concerned with clarity, im not looking for a painkiller here, i just dont want pure mush all the time till the neck pickup becomes unusable.

Im also concerned a bit about the output difference. the nailbomb is a good clip louder than the abraxas. i actually thought about using an abraxas bridge in the neck position. what do you guys think of that?
ive used some outrageously hot bridge pickups (like a dimarzio evo 7) as neck pickups without an issue.

Hows the crawler? somebody mentioned it being the same as an abraxas, but looking it has an a5 magnet in it instead of a4. is it otherwise the same?

thanks a ton in advance guys

The Crawler neck is AIV, and slightly hotter than Abraxas.

I too fear that the Abraxas neck wouldn't be loud enough to pair with the Nailbomb, but I think Tim would be able to answer something like that.

As for clarity on the lows I've never had a problem with neither the Crawler or Mule neck and both are AIV. But then I again I never go below a low B.
