Sorry no BKPs
« on: April 21, 2008, 06:09:03 PM »
I've just finished this Joe Satriani look alike but unfortunately couldn't convince the guy to fit BKPs; mainly 'cos he wanted the chrome finish on the pickups. http://www.legraguitars.co.uk/ca622.htm

Has anyone got any recommendations for which BKPs would fit the bill?

Any chance of supplying BKPs with chrome finish bobbins Tim? Just in case I can talk him into an upgrade.

Nice!  :D   I like the Kahler rather than a Floyd, and the block markers give a bit of a Carvin vibe.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

Cold Sweat neck is similar-ish to a PAF Pro.

As for the bridge, don't know :)

Maybe Tim could rewire it, but DiMarzios have bigger magnets so I'm a little stumped for ideas. BUT the chrome look is amazing.

Got any shots of the six bolt neck joint?

There's a good shot of the six bolt pattern on this earlier forum thread http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5929 but that doesn't really tell the whole story. The neck is a tailored interference fit in the body and there's a lot of detail in the interface involving clearances in the body screw holes, precise countersinks around the screw holes to eliminate displacement of timber into the joint and the spacing of the bolts to get a totally uniform load over the whole contact area. I spent months with trial projects and pressure sensitive Fuji paper to get to this. If you read some of the reviews or ask some of the guys on this forum who have Legra guitars they'll tell you that the mid / bass response and sustain is up there with the best glued and thru neck guitars.

That guitar looks amazing!

I was wondering though, why aren't all custom guitars made with set/thru necks anyways?

I think the better question is why would all custom guitars be made neck thru?

Its not neccessarily better - Guitar tone is directly related to the construction methods - And the difference in sound with a neck thru and bolt on of the same materials would be apparent.

Personally, having owned a lot of neck-thru and bolt-on guitars, I don't think there is an appreciable (or useful) sustain benefit to neck-thru over a well-made bolt-on. Sure, upper-fret access can be better, but a contoured-heel bolt-on is just fine for me too...

Tone does vary, I think though, like the last poster said, but I don't think either can be said to be better :)
