dont know if this is possible!
« on: April 24, 2008, 08:21:27 PM »
Hey again, duno if this is possible. But im possibly thinking about getting a nez rg1570l and tim has recommended, alinco V pigs in the bridge, cold sweats in the neck, and irish tours in the middle. Well im happy with that. But thing is i really like the strat neck pup sound, and obviously only have a middle pup for single coils. So was wondering is it possible to get that sounding using a middle pickup? Like a customs, or using a neck pup, or is its possition to far from neck. Anyway ill let you guys expand and gimi ideas. I think that it would just be too far from the neck.  Usually, from my experience, neck and middle pups tend to be the same spec.  And moving the position of the pup just a few mil can make a difference to the sound...

A better compromise could be to coil split the Cold Sweat, i reckon.

You could wire in a coil split for the neck pickup - either with a push/pull pot on the tone control, a mini-switch, or swap the 5-way selector out for a mega-switch.

Even with the standard 5-way selector you can get middle + split neck in position 4...

Coil-splitting the Cold Sweat would probably be your best bet.

It still wouldn't quite be the same as a proper strat coil.

Perhaps you could use a Mississippi Queen or a Manhattan in the neck to get that single coil sound (still not like a strat though).

Maybe you could ask Tim to do you a strat pickup built into a humbucker cover (you could also make yourself a simple sustainer circuit fed by said coil with a switch to swap between out put and sustain inorder to fill the remaining space (only has a weak coil and magnet so shouldn't be too bad)).
I too use chicken as a measurement.

yeah thing is for anything with mid-heavy gain i like humbucker in neck, but for cleans and SRV style OD i love strat neck. Is it possible to get a custom pup done for that kinda thing?

And you've already got your answer. Split the Sweat. You can find a few clips in the players section of a split cold sweat. Sounds very nice to me. Much better than a true single coil neck to be honest.
