Abraxas bridge (sic) .... respek!
« on: June 08, 2008, 07:19:10 AM »
Just pulled my mules out of a LP standard and wired in an Abraxas callibrated set. I did my research on the forum here and was expecting good things from the neck pickup but, several posts were a bit differdent about the bridge. Actually reading between the lines, the AB bridge seems to have gained a neg rep. Well, let me set the record straight...

The Abraxas bridge is hotter than than Monica Bellucci in June. It pushes every non-BKP's head down the toilet and pulls the chain. Twice.

Singing leads, aggressive yet dynamic & sensitive, perfectly balanced hi/mid/lows, wonderful attack and harmonics, clear clean sound, tons of output. The best lead guitar pickup I have ever played.
It deserves a lot more attention.

I wasn't so knocked out with the Mule bridge in this guitar (almost certainly due to my bad soldering - I found my old iron was defective and not reaching the right temperature) but, whatever, with the Abraxas bridge this Paula has found its true lead voice.

One happy punter.
Abraxas callibrated, Mules callibrated.

I know nothing about these pickups, but on the strength of your recommendation I've just Googled Monica Bellucci...

Holy Mother!  She's amazing!!!

If the PUPS are anything like her, I'm selling a kidney to get some.

Abraxas is one of the sets that upon reading the description I went "yep, this is the pickup I want", but after talking it over with Tim I decided against it.

I don't think it has a negative rep at all, it's just somewhat of a specialty pickup. Being in the mid-output category it has the danger of getting muddy in some guitars. The sound/voice is destinctly vintage but too hot for most vintage players, and not hot/tight enough for most metal players. Compared to others in the BKP range of course, I remember hearing some terrific metal clips from the Abraxas.
I don't mean this as a negative thing about the Abraxas set, just to explain why it might be underrepresented, and not often suggested.
