I know zip about V's but I do know a bit about LP's.

First off I would say that Epi LP's can be hit or miss so I would play before you pay if that's what you're going for. They are known for a recent improvement on finish quality but bland pickups.

A better option IMHO would be to pay slightly more and go for a Japanese LP, such as a Tokai LS75 Love Rock or an Edwards LP-92.

Obviously if you decide to pay a bit more, you start to approach Gibson territory. A second hand Gibson LP Studio or Classic can be found for lowish prices on ebay right now - if you look hard enough.

The difference in money is worth it between an Epi LP and a Gibson LP.

This is just my opinion and I'm not an Epi LP hater  :D

I still own one ('94 natural birdseye maple top) and still play it from time to time. I'm just saying that Edwards, Tokai and certainly Gibson (used prices) will give far better value for money.

When I think Gibson I personally think Les Pauls, or maybe SGs even.  Never been overly impressed by Gibson Vs or Explorers, but don't get to see too many either.

The rule with Gibson is always, always be sure to play it first and if it's at a store, make them set it up before you buy it.  A lot of them have bad necks and I've seen some other inexcusable mistakes on various Gibson guitars (that cost you a few grand as well) such as my friend had a Les Paul and they put the bridge on the wrong place of the body - it was off by a solid inch and a half and you couldn't get intonation even close!

Real men turn their volume to 11!

Rebel Yells + Les Paul = the Ultimate Rock Pickup.

Agreed completely. I would never buy a Gibson LP, because the made in Japan Tokais are every bit as good, and as well made as a "standard" quality Gibson LP.

The problem of Gibby LP here in Brazil is the price, about £3500... It's usually the amont of money that a brazillian earn... on a year... :?
Jap copies are hardly found, but I would search anyway...

Not sure where you live in the northeast (is it, right?), so can't speak properly, but I would search a good luthier there to have a good guitar for a decent price! But I don't know many guys there (probably none or one), I bet Eric should know something better in this side of country... I live in SP...

This is subject to opinion but IMHO you need to get the right Tokai LP model to get one that touches a Gibson LP. I personally haven't played a Tokai LP that was as good as a correctly set up Gibson LP but in saying that I haven't played any top end price Tokai LP's.

Given the choice of buying a Tokai LP and a Gibson LP at the same price, that feel and play the same, I would go for the Gibson.

The subject of Gibson QC is an old done-to-death one on many guitar forums.

My take on it is (from personal experience) that Gibson QC wasn't as good as it should have been for a long time but seems to have got a lot better in recent years.
