Open pole or covered

Is there a difference in the sounds between open pole and a covered pickup or is it a case of aesthetics?

Wow two posts in one day - just full of questions

I believe there is a difference in sound - that's why people started taking the covers off years back. I understand you get a slightly more open sound, more top-end?

I have little or no experience of this though, for me it's purely about aesthetics - I much prefer the look of covered pickups  :D

Someone compared it to twisting the 'Presence' knob on a Marshall amp a bit. Personally when using Marshalls that knob is useless anyway, but the covers seem to make the tone a little softer, less open really. I love both.

Covers will as others said take away a bit of that high end and make it sound a little warmer.  Open pickups will have obviously more high end and more presence to them. :D
