I can only do it on a strat, anything else and the volume knobs too far away.

If you want the ultimate Strat/V hybrid:

Damn, what a ugly headstock.

As for the violining, I found it quite easy on JACKSON guitars, cos they have pretty close volume knob. Otherwise it's not really practical.
I wish women were like pickups - if they lack output, you sell them... or ask Tim to rewind them :D

There is a trick with a rubber band on the volume knob to get it to turn back, you could try that.  I always thought that a foot pedal was easiest though!

The problem with the volume pedal idea is that it's linear sort of fade, as opposed to the pot, which I think gives a more desirable tone.

I used to do it all the time, and to be honest I always found hammering on to be the best bet - although sometimes you want to fade in a pinch harmonic!

I tried it with hammering rather than picking this morning, and I think its definately the way forward for this technique. Obviously I'm still quite shakey, but its coming together after just a half an hour or so practise.

Yeah that is if your pedal is loaded with a linear pot but you can get audio taper volume pedals aswell. My Morley has a swell that's a lot like the guitar's volume control except it doesn't "clean up" as much, which I think is actually a good thing for a volume pedal.
