Compressed sounding clean pickup - where next ?
« on: July 30, 2008, 08:47:48 PM »

Hi folks ,

As you may ( or may not ) have gathered, I am loving the sound of my 'Mississipi Queens'  in a Tanglewood 335 copy.  The 'sweet spot' for me is about 1/16" twixt strings and pickups. There,  I get a clear, sweet,  articulate,  yet compressed sound that I love.  I know I could use my Barber Tonepress to get this effect with any guitar, but would love to have that particular sound 'on board' any guitar I own - so I am not effect or amp reliant.

If I ever did get another ( mahogany ) based guitar, what other B.K.P give a sweet, compressed , fat , organic sound yet remain clean ?

I realise that what I am asking may be considered heresy in B.K.P circles, as we usually buy B.K.P for open and dynamic qualities. From what I read it seems like Holy Diver, Abraxas, or Crawlers - but I don't want crunch or early distortion, just another flavour of 'fat' and compressed that my M.Q.s have got me addicted to.

I have been able to 'dial in' Alinico IV Stormy Mondays and Mules to a lesser degree, but nothing yet rivals that fat , round quality of the M.Qs set close to the strings.

So, when buying another set of B.K.P Humbuckers in the future where do I go next ?

After lowering the pickup some, i am getting great fairly compressed cleans on acoldsweat neck,  especially split.  i actually have a tonepress, which i love, but when i switch it off, and A/b it without, the CS still sounds sweet.  Lowering it more than I thought i should for a BK is what did it.  i also lowered the lugs some because CS are so powerful.  I have a ibanez S series  mahogany

Hi Derek - hope you're well?

Without a doubt I agree with Ben - the Black Dog does EXACTLY what you're describing  :)

I would say the Abraxas might get you there, or the AII Stormy Monday.

Thank you for the input chaps !   I forgot to mention to H.T.H. - that I had already tried AII Stormy's but the bass response was too loose and undefined for my purposes. It's still a favourite Bare Knuckle P.U of mine though !

So far it looks like Black Dog then, although I do not  dismiss  the validity of other suggestions given.  As I am now an addict to B.K.P. products, no reply or observation is wasted.  Thank you !

( P.S. Dave, a difficult time at this end, but coping as best can.  Hence it being more constructive  to concentrate on the positive stuff such as our beloved cats, guitars and those closest to us ).  Thanks for asking, hope all is well with you and yours ).
