A Metal 2x12 for my Carvin V3
« on: August 23, 2008, 12:51:48 AM »
'allo rockers,

So I'm continuing my GearGasm, getting ready to start gigs in a few months (it only took me years to finally get the balls to do this). I'm trying to find a good 2x12 to go with my Carvin V3 I'm getting next week -- I'm gonna hot rod it with JJ tubes, too. I was thinking of a 4x12, but I hear if you cab's good enough, that's not really necessary.

I currently have an Avatar 2x12 with Eminence Tonkers that I use with a tube poweramp and a Pod XT. I don't think that's gonna cut it this time.

I'd like to keep the price to ~800 w/ speakers.

I play a mixture of 80's Metal and modern Powermetal. Here's my gear:

Carvin DC127 w/ SD JB's - my "Classic Rock" axe
Carvin Contour C66 w/ Holy Divers -- it's my EVH/George Lynch SuperStrat
Carvin V220 (possibly) with EMG's, later Painkillers - My 'modern metal' axe, think Children of Bodom.
Pod XT.

What would you all suggest? I was going to get an EarCandy BuzzBomb, but I've heard the wait can be up to 13 weeks! Eeep.

I'm thinking of the Port City OS Wave 2x12. Any other suggestions?

And what speakers should I put in? I'm not tied to any brand names. I hear the V3 works 'best' with speakers like the Celestion GT70's, but there's got to be an improvement on their design by now.

I'd like to be able to get fat EVH 'Lead Tone' when I want, or sharp chunky ultra-gain too.

Much love in advance.
You have the power!

Yeah, from what I've seen they look remarkably good.

Of the 2x12" cabs I've used, the Engl E212VH was the best: almost bulletproof construction (yet still easily portable because of the two recessed carrying handles on the sides like a 4x12) & great metal sounds from a pair of Vintage 30 speakers.

FWIW it sounds identical to the Mesa Recto 2x12 (which costs about 50% more) - hardly suprising as it shares very similar dimensions, same speakers & independance...
