Amp and speaker advice
« on: September 04, 2008, 08:11:06 PM »
Hey guys, just wondering if i could get a few recommendations!

Seeing as i've now started my new job and will be getting paid in less than two weeks, i've finally decided its time to break my valve amp virginity!

Originally i was gonna go for a Vox AC15CC1, but after trying a Tiny Terror head in a shop, i'm sorta leaning towards that now. If it was to be the case, its not only about 100 quid  cheaper, but a lot easier to use by the looks of it.

If i was to go for the TT, i already have a Marshall MG 412, but i can't see it being the best paring for the amp, so was thinking about either buying a new 112, or take the amp and speaker out of my solid state fender amp (I won't be using it anyway) and get a new speaker and use it as a cab, or maybe even build my own one. The advantage of the AC15 being it already has the speaker obviously.

For a speaker, i love the sound of that Alnico Blue, but it seems a lot of money, so any alternative to that for blues widdly wooing would be nice.

So to summarise (sp?)
AC15 or TT?
What kind of speaker for a cab?

Think TT is built on similar circuit to the vox....TT is a great little amp. Hot 100's are supposed to be a good alround speaker...tried my Martamp with a 2x12 loaded with them and sounded sweet

Depends what kinda tone you're after - clean to crunchy rock I'd buy the Vox.  Harder rock I'd buy the TT.

If you get the TT I'd use your existing Marshall 412 for now and see how it sounds.  Then work out how you want it to be better, and come back for some more advice  ;)

Agreed. In my experience, a mediocre 412 usually sounds better than a good 112.

DO you actually want a smaller cab ?

Also, in my experience a reasonable 2x12 is much the same cost as a 1x12 anyway. Recently, I've become an advocate for having as many speakers as you can be bothered to lug around.

It certainly appeals to me more than a 4x12 or a 2x12. I also considered the TT combo, but it seems a bit much imo.

The 1x12 i would like because it means if i wanted to take it anywhere, it wouldnt pose any major problems since i don't drive.

If you are getting 1x12, I would advise getting a plywood-constructed one, with as large a cabinet as you can get.

1x12's so often have too small cabinets, and sound rather "boxy", including my own Orange 1x12. All the great 1x12 designs seem either to be ported designs (eg. the Mesa Thiele cabs) or have an almost 2x12-sized cab.

If portability really is a big issue, I would say that there are a lot more, better options if you go for a 2x12. However, I can see that not being able to drive is a very significant issue for you.

For the amp around 400, not too sure about a cab. Could maybe add a bit more for a cab. And yes, for blues widely wooing.

Tried an ac15 and an ac30 today. Although the cleans were nice, I wasn't too impressed with the overdriven sounds. So I may go with the TT. Which I liked. Bring on pay day!!

Also gonna get a dano DC 59.

Right, for £400-450 you've got a lot of options. For just over £400, you could get the Laney GS212ie cab, plus two two brand new Celestion Blue speakers (if you really would like blues).
That's the cab I would get at the moment if I was looking for a 2x12. I wouldn't go for blues myself, but then that's just my tastes.   I've not used the Laney, but it's specs are good. It's a good-sized 2x12 ply cabinet (bigger size generally equals bigger tone). It's just that the speakers in it are sh1t. So a couple of blues from Lean-business.co.uk and you would be sorted. If you are concerned about swapping speakers, then don't be. If you've ever soldered anything before then it really is a piece of cake (just protect the cones from any drips of molten solder).
If you wanted a higher quality construction cab, then talk to MartinW about one of his Martamp cabs. He'll put whatever speakers you want in it, but with blues I suspect it'll be nearer to £500 than £400 (I could be wrong on that though). THe Martamp cab IS higher quality, but is actually a smaller and lighter cab (which is better for portability, but IMHO not quite as good for tone as a well built larger cab).  It's the size of the Laney cab which attracts me.
Some folks might advise you to look at the Orange 2x12, but it really is a beast, and almost as heavy as a light 4x12.

If you are really looking for something than is reasonably portable, and also well made, then I reckon the Martamp cab could be for you. It genuinely is carryable in one hand, by it's top handle (it also has side handles BTW).
If blues are stretching the budget too much, then it really does all depend on your own tastes in speakers.
For cheaper options I like the standard Cele greenbacks for the "greenback" sound. A recent new discovery (for me) is the Cele G12K-100, which is a classy genuine all round speaker. If you like bright, slightly mid-scooped tone then the Cele G12H-30 70th anniversary is a great speaker.  For a greenback-type tone, but slightly darker, with tighter bass, the G12-65 heritage's are very good.
There are a lot of good speakers out there, but what is difficult is knowing what your own personal preference is. Unless you do a lot of research , listen to a lot of soundclips, play a few cabs, and even go through a few different speakers in the same cab, then it's difficult to know what types of tone the different speakers give you.
For anyone wanting a cheaper, general all round good speaker, my advice these days is the G12K-100.

And I haven't even approached the subject of closed versus open-backed cabs. Do you know which you prefer ?

I can't say I have a preference about open or closed, would probably go for open since I've heard that can be better?

The other speaker I considered was the greenback, but I do like the blues. So I might just save up another months wages and go for the laney cab you recommended, I dnt think changing speakers would be beyond me either.

Also, thank you all for your advice.

Yes!

I don't know if it is of any use, but I like the Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker. It is quite loud and rated at only 50 Watts will give a good sound even if not cranked. I just mention it because it is very full-bodied with a big bottom and smooth top end. Should you ever find the Tiny Terror to be too shrill and harsh or lacking bass, you might want to try a speaker change. It shouldn't be a major investement and if you don't like it they usually go quite ok on Ebay.
