Pickups for my Fat Strat.
« on: September 08, 2008, 08:50:04 PM »
Hello, I have a beautiful Fender American Deluxe HSS (Alder body and Rosewood fret), that I love to play with, right now I have it with the stock SCN pickups, I think that at least for a while, I will replace all pickups and try my Fender just for Metal. Djent kind of Metal, like Meshuggah. What are your suggestions for all pickups? (Bridge, Middle and Neck)

I will play it thru a Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier.

Thanks a lot.

Cold Sweat - not TOO hot, but hot enough to have the poke and clarity for metal.

Thanks, and what about Painkiller, Neilbomb and Warpig? And for the Middle and Neck, what is best?

Sorry.

I would think the best neck/middle pickups to go with the Cold Sweat or Nailbomb would be Irish Tours.  With the PK or Warpig, probably Trilogies?  But the metal guys can advise better.

Also, have you considered putting a humbucker in the neck position?  Seems more suitable for metal.

I used to play in a metal band in the 80s, the rhythm guitarist used to have a lot of problems when he walked the streets to do his shopping etc... No-one knew who the hell he was, that wasn't the problem, it was hordes of small hooligans (children) running after him and shouting "Hey, it's Neil" insults at him...

Other than that, can't help too much isky - all I can say is I love the ITs, they will do "old-skool" metal/rock when I try to play it (not often), but I've no idea how they compete with the humbuckers suggested.

I'm not great at giving pup advice, but we have a strat with Irish Tours and it sounds AWSOME, so I'd go IT for the SS.

For the H... Nailbomb is a great pup, breaks up fast, but is very 'middy', possibly not enough bottom end. Cold Sweat would be worth a shot. I'll also throw in the surprisingly versatile Warpig (ceramic) but that might not suit your style.
