Gibson Historic '57 demo on Bogner site: Mules or VHIIs?
« on: April 06, 2008, 01:27:55 AM »
Ok... who doesn't love Greg Vs tone on Bogner's web site?  He's going thru an XTC classic (love that Plexi!)

I was wondering, if I'm going to fit my Edwards Les Paul with what Greg has in his '57 (I'm assuming they're stock pickups), would I go for Mules or VHIIs?  Is there something in-between?

I understand the amp and his fingers have a lot to do with his tone.  I don't have $4k laying around. That would buy the amp...but the fingers?

Sounds Muley to me! But I guess there is something in-between such as the AV mule.

Mule AVs?  Is there such a place between the Mule AIV and VHII?  What's it like?  Are there unicorns?   :P

Well you specifically asked if there was something in-between. Ask gwem or PhilKing, as they have the A5 Mules.

Thanks ilyti.  I don't know why I didn't find this before.

I'm torn.  Mules, VHIIs, or Black Dogs?  Dang...proceeding to pull out hair.  I want to go blues rock, but also want to be able to bring out some good sustain (a la Neal Schon) when needed.  I like more mids in my sound, but BDs might be a bit too much.  They also may have too much bite to the highs for me.   :?

I'd say Mules.  VHIIs are brighter, Black Dogs have WAY more bass and low mids.  If you want a hotter pickup in the Mule vein, the Crawler is a great pickup with more pokey mids (I liked it alot and don't know wtf I sold mine)

The solo part on the plexi distorted clip is perfect sounding I love that tone how would you guys describe it as Fat or bright??. Its all nice but the bass is a touch muddy.

I'd call it bright, theres a fair amount of high-end attack in that tone (more than I'd use myself).

fwiw, that 'plexi' setting has way more gain than any real plexi I've ever owned - they should have called it the EVH channel.

I like it. Are the cold Sweats that bright or is that more crawler territory. Its nice to have sound to compare to??

It's neither. As discussed this sound would be better nailed with a set of Mules. The Cold Sweat is definitely brighter than the Crawler, but the Crawler is more "PAF-like" so I'd still take crawlers over cold sweats for this tone. But again, Mules would nail it to an A.
