Pickups for standard maple strat?
« on: September 28, 2008, 03:21:03 PM »
Hi I'm new to this forum and would really appreciate some advice on which BKP's to buy. The guitar is a 2007 American standard Strat with maple board. I looking for a gilmour-type tone. Basically warm, glassy cleans through to smooth overdiven lead tones. I like the sound of the Apaches but don't know how suitable or versatile they are. My amp is a Cornford hurricane if that helps.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Luke.

Hi, welcome to the forum :D

While I've not tried the Apaches myself, those are exactly what I'd be buying to do that sort of thing in a maple-board strat.

Thanks man. I'm not to sure about the difference between the alnico II, III and V and the plate on the bridge pickup. Do you know what kind of effect these would have on the overall tone? Also do you think I'd be able to get SRV and little wing sounds from them. I'm pretty clueless as you can probably tell!

Hi and welcome.  I have a set of Apaches in an original 57 strat and a set with baseplates in a Warmoth CBS style strat.  The difference is in the bass response, the baseplates give you more bass and thicken the sound a bit, which could be just what you want for the Gilmour tone, but not for Little Wing!  However the regular Apache's are incredibly versitile and can cover most bases (though it depends on which SRV and Gilmour tones you are looking at).  You can always put the baseplates on the neck and bridge pu's and leave the middle without to get the Little Wing tone with the thicker Gilmour tones.  What amp are you using?

Im using a Cornford Hurricane so quite a dark middy sound, but providing I can get the funds together i've been considering getting a Twin Reverb RI to use as a clean channel and using the Corford purely for dirt. Maybe a Callaham trem block at some stage as well. Just a dream at the minute tho. I don't really use any effects bar an MXR GT-OD. It'd be cool to hear some clips of your Apaches. Do you think the baseplates will detract from the 'classic' strat tone a great deal?

Can't help too much on the magnets - I tend not to think about them - but there's others who can help (and I think there are old threads with loads of info - use the search facility, you'll find loads of stuff). I think that the lower the value, the "softer/warmer" the pickup sound is - but don't quote me...

A plate on the bridge pickup fattens it up. It's more common on a tele bridge, but I understand it can do a similar job on strat pickups. I guess the tone must change a bit, but I think it's a fattening rather than losing anything. I decided not to bother when I got my Irish Tours - and as it turns out I really didn't need it, they are nicely balanced, and I'm using a strat bridge on it's own for the first time in my life.

I personally went for ITs because I was pitching for SRV and Rory Gallagher territory. However, I'm fairly sure that others are getting SRV tones out of Apaches on here - and I've heard elsewhere an argument that SRV didn't actually use hotter wound pickups anyway!

For a "fruitier" Little Wing sort of tone I'd be aiming at something other than my ITs, although they're not bad at it. I believe that Apaches or Mother's Milks would be good choices for that. From what I've read on here, the difference between them is roughly "Apaches for 50s spank" and "Mother's Milks for 60s quack".

But like most people, I've found that BKPs are very versatile - for example, my ITs do most of what I expect a strat to be able to do. I picked them because I wanted to use them mainly for slightly hotter blues stuff, but still be able to cover other bases. They seemed the obvious choice, and they've not let me down.

If I was after more of an allrounder now, I'd pick Apaches or MMs.

EDIT: Philking posted while I was typing (I'm also cooking the sunday roast, so it's going a bit slow :D) - I think it was him that gave me the 50s/60s spank/quack ideas

Thanks alot for the advice man. It's been really helpful. Think I'm set on the apaches - just gotta make a decision about the magnets and baseplates now!

I have Apaches with a Base Plate only in the bridge. Makes a very versatile and balanced set and perfect for Gilmour.

sounds sweet man! Which pickup did you use? How do they sound for clean chording etc? Do they manage a chili's type tone or SRV? I know I'm asking a lot from these pickups but I've heard they're fairly versatile. Also what magnets do you have in yours?

I am coming at this fairly late but can confirm the versatility of the Apaches. There is no doubt that they are vintage Strat tone but they cover a lot of ground. Great warm Strat tone-not high output. I do have a set of Slowhands too and would say that they have a little more in the mids. From what I have read, I think you'd probably find the Apaches to give you what you want.

Cheers man. I am looking for a slight boost in output - my biggest problem with the standard fender pickups is how they handle distortion. clean they don't sound terrible, just a bit lifeless. But as soon as the drive is cranked up they sound weak and brittle and basically give up the ghost. Really what I want is a set of pickups that can handle hot lead lines (comfortably numb etc) but still give a warm glassy clean tone. Anything more than that is humbucker territory for me. Do you think the Apaches will cope with this? how does their output compare to standard fender pickups? Do the baseplates improve how they handle distortion?
Thanks in advance-

I can't help with the baseplate sorry as I don't have one. I haven't checked the output of standard p/ups either for that matter. What I would say is that the Apaches seem to retain their identity when there are effects being used- rather than descending into a characterless mush. I don't know if it is just my experience but I have found that less is more when it comes to distortion-again I don't use a lot as I play mostly clean -in fact I am probably not the right one to answer that point.
