NCD - predictably: new cab day
« on: September 13, 2008, 11:53:53 PM »
2 mesa boogie theile 1x12s with EVM-12L speakers....

so what do i reckon... i reckon their heavy! one of these would likely weigh as much as a light 2x12. considering my Marshall JMP50 I'm getting a very modern tone, a bit scoopy perhaps. Its not the tone I prefer, but it damn it - it sounds great anyway :) very defined, very large sounding! Even with almost no master volume. the bass is deep, but not flabby, so its fine actually.

yes, they easily sound better than my exisiting marshall 1x12. would be nice if they would be a bit less br00tal, but it is fun! i might change the driver in one for an experiment. a sidewinder or classic lead 80 seems favourite (if someone has a spare, maybe we can do a deal?)

in a way, i'm shocked at the improvement in tone i've just received. scoopy metal is all well and good, but i prefer a more middy sound... not withstanding that, its still better quality all over.

Interesting you find them scooped! The players I have heard use them have some very middy tones going on.

Cool cabs and if you decide to sell a speaker I`ll buy   8)

they are wicked cabs, i just battered them again  8)  8) they aren't totally scooped out, thats for sure... but it definately sounds comparitively scoopy over my old marshall 1x12. i have to leave the mids on 10 on my head or i miss something, but i do like very middy guitar tones. probably they just have a flat eq curve. they are 100% modern sounding, very metal. you can tell they aren't celestion speakers in there instantly. but they work out well clean and ok with light crunch. obviously this is the honeymoon period - i can't imagine anything more different to my old cab! its almost like i have an entirely different rig.

completely sold on closed back, ported 1x12s now. just to reinterate again, largely as i'm so happy - the bass reponse is deep, but still /tight/. its what you need :)

I bet the neighbours love you now.
I bid up to £370 on those, factoring about £30 for getting into the smog.

If you wanted just one cab, I think you could list one on eBay with postage, and you will easily make that kind of money, the last one went for about £305 I think

i will highly likely endup selling one of them, but i want to enjoy the experience of both cabs for a bit.

as for the volume... yeah, these are quite alot louder ;) a bit impractical to use at my place, as you know. also as you point out, the price was a reasonable bargain. i think the home collect only, and the fact there were two cabs lead to this decent deal. where the guy lived was a bit of a mission to get to, i had to take a taxi back with the cabs. (almost wrote a cab back with the cabs ;) ) when i picked them up he said 'these are the next best thing to a 4x12', which is what other people say about these mesa thiele cabs - so far i agree!

i'll try my scumback or my g12h-100 in one next week as an experiment.
