String locks on Tune-o-matics?
« on: September 13, 2008, 06:30:06 AM »
So, am i getting this right?  There are string locks on tune-o-matics?  I don't remember this ever being a factor...  I was just looking @ the Ibanez K7APEX2 7-String online and one of the reviewers stated that there were string locks?  What is all this about?

No, tune-o-matic bridges don't have string locks.

Tone-pros are referred to as "locking" because the bridge is "locked" to the posts by some sort of allen key arrangement (as opposed to just sitting on them held by string tension)

Remember that Ibanez use a lot of proprietry hardware, so they may have adopted a tune-o-matic style design slightly.  Do you have a pic of the guitar?
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

I just looked on the Ibanez site - it's a TonePros bridge.  As Antag said, the bridge is locked in place so (a) it won't fall off when you change strings and (b) sustain is improved (they claim).  The strings themselves aren't locked in any way.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I have such a locking bridge on my baritone. I can't really comment on any tonal improvement, as it was stock on that guitar, but it is a very well-made, stable and comfortable bridge.

No, just a regular TonePros bridge.  Here's the guitar:

Aye that's the one.  Very nice looking guitar IMO.  Then again, i do have an Ibanez fetish.

I must admit I quite like it myself, and I'm not an Ibanez fan at all.
