need some BKP advice
« on: September 14, 2008, 05:58:09 AM »
hey guys im new to the forum and BKP's
just need a little advice on which pups to choose for my new guitar,
its a basswood 7 string with a locking trem,
im after a high output set, with a tight and clear sounding bridge pickup, and a smooth articulate neck, both with a warm and full-bodied sound with plenty of depth but no mud.
If you guys could point me in the right direction it would be great,
thanks heaps and hi to you all

lol you just described 1/3 of the BKP line
the other 2/3 are the non-high output models
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

 yep, that is quite amusing.

Those are quite broad generalisations, what you need to do noob_pwm is give some idea of the specific types of music you play to describe what you're after, the type of amp you play through, that sort of thing - then there'll be people crawling all over you with more specific suggestions then.

Hello & welcome to the forum

I started drafing a post with a suggestion then realised I could just as easily suggest 3 or 4 others.  As others have said, could you give us an idea of a particular tone and/or playing style you had in mind, do you play clean much, what amp you will be using etc?

FWIW my first thoughts were:
Miracle Man, Painkiller, A5 Warpig or Holy Diver bridges
Cold Sweat, Miracle Man, VHII or Warpig necks

As you can see - that's quite a few choices...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

i'll be playing shred & heavy prog as well as euro-style metal  on this thing so it needs to be versatile  and clear, remember the guitar is basswood.
I use a marshall JVM410H head (boosted with a TS808) & a TC g-major with offboard eq (and a kerry-king esque offboard FX loop mid boost), a V30 cab. cleans are more important in the neck, i generally coil split my pickups when playing cleans.
I really want saturated mids in the bridge especially, and the low end needs to be tight and clear. not too much highs in the bridge or any icepick, needs to be well-balanced but focused on the mids & low mids. It would be important for this pickup to have a deep low end as the guitar is basswood, but not too much as to become muddy on the low B. The neck pickup needs to sound smooth and organic. It cant have too much low end and must have superb articulation and the highs can't be too harsh. It should sound open but well defined.
i would imagine the neck would be using an alnico V and the bridge would most likely be ceramic.
have a listen to the absence's rhythm tone, this would be pretty much a summary of the sound I'm after from the bridge. Evergrey would be the closest to the neck pickup sound im after, i find it hard to generalise tones by other artists though because they would most certainly not be using my setup the way i do, nor the same guitar.
thanks for your help guys, its much appreciated!

+1

That's exactly what I'd go for as well (I have that very combination in my Jackson KV2 - it slays) :)

after much consulting and sitting on the fence i decided the painkiller bridge and cold sweat (as recomended) would be the way to go. If they don't do it for me i guess I can always return them for an alternative so there's nothing to lose. I will let everyone here know how they go, thanks so much peeps!

I'd be surprised if the PK was too bright - my KV2 is a VERY bright guitar (alder body wings/maple centreblock/ebony fretboard) & the PK is certainly not an icepick in it....
