Ceramic Nailbomb - What's it like?
« on: November 03, 2008, 09:30:32 AM »
Hey guys,
I've been wondering what a ceramic Nailbomb is like. I found info about most of the pickups here but almost nothing about the C-Bomb.
My guitar is a 7-String Ibanez with basswood body, maple neck and 27" scale tuned to B standard or A standard. Currently I'm using an Evo7 in it. I like its tight and crunchy low-end but I want something more organic and less high-mids-focused. The highs could be a little less screamy. I like the thought of a tightened Nailbomb because the A5 Nailbomb will probably be a bit too loose in the lower register.
I've been considering a C-Pig as well but it seems to be too much for me. Too much low-end and too much output.
Thanks in advance!

a ceramic nailbomb WILL be high mid focused
either will the painkiller

you can ask for some custom winding
maybe an underwound ceramic pig (taming lows and mids)

I use Cold Sweats with my 7. The bridge is quite bright, but definitely not piercing - it's neutral in the mids and has a very tight bottom end. Well worth considering.

Incidentally, the Nailbomb 7 uses an A8 magnet. If you search through some of the older threads you should be able to find a fair bit of info and some clips.

You should also consider some lower output pickups, considering that you'll have higher gauge strings on. Something down to the Vintage Hot range would likely serve very well to keep things tight at the bottom end. Stick around for about a week, and hopefully I'll be able to substantiate this statement :)

I didn't know that the (ceramic) Nailbomb is as high-mid focused as the Painkiller or the Evo 7. So it's probably not for me.
The Coldsweat came to my mind as well. I like the idea of a vintage-modern-hybrid and it would match the Coldsweat Neck quite nicely I think. ;)

I don't know if te bridge can be described as quite vintage-modern. It is a vintagey Ceramic sound though

I think the Nailbomb should still be plenty tight with the A5. Listen to more NB clips and see if you really think it's that loose. I was thinking about a C-Bomb for some extra tightness, but I ended up with the A5. It should also help get you that more organic sound you're going for.

Incidentally, the Nailbomb 7 uses an A8 magnet.

I don't think that's true. The description says it's A5, and Tim really dislikes A8. There are a few people who had theirs specially made with A8, but that's it.

the cold sweat is beautifully tight and crunchy, but I wouldn't put it in basswood
unless it was overwound to fill up the lack of low end of the wood
