Odd time signature
« on: November 07, 2008, 05:41:12 AM »
It's really hard to headbang to prog metal bands, unless you enjoy a little whiplash action...

I'm bored, lol.

SO I guess some tracks in 9-8, 5-4, 13-8 and (arguably) 6-8 aren't going to go down too well?

:D

Try this for a 12 bar blues (all semiquavers)

15/16
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[-----------5-------4------------------]
[-2-2-2-2----2-2-----5-4-3-2-3-4-5-]

14/16 (7/8) (last note is a crotchet)
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[-----------5------4-------3\/\/\/\/\/\-]
[-2-2-2-2----2-2----2-2---------------]

15/16
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[-----------5-------4------------------]
[-2-2-2-2----2-2-----5-4-3-2-3-4-5-]

14/16 (7/8) (last note is a crotchet)
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[-----------5------4-------3\/\/\/\/\/\-]
[-2-2-2-2----2-2----2-2---------------]

15/16
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[----------5-------4-------------------]
[-2-2-2-2---2-2-----5-4-3-2-3-4-5-]
[---------------------------------------]

14/16 (7/8) (last note is a crotchet)
[------------------------------------------]
[------------------------------------------]
[------------------------------------------]
[-----------5-----4------3\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\-]
[-2-2-2-2---2-2---2-2-------------------]
[------------------------------------------]

15/16
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[-----------5-------4------------------]
[-2-2-2-2----2-2-----5-4-3-2-3-4-5-]

14/16 (7/8)  (last note is a crotchet)
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[----------------------------------------]
[-----------5------4-------3\/\/\/\/\/\-]
[-2-2-2-2----2-2----2-2---------------]

4/4
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[---------------------------------------]
[----------7-----6----------5------4--]
[-4-4-4-4--4-4---2-2-2-2---2-2-----]
[---------------------------------------]

11/8 (last note is a crotchet)
[-----------------------------------------------------------]
[-----------------------------------------------------------]
[-----------------------------------------------------------]
[-----------------------------------------------------------]
[-----------5-----4----------5------4------3\/\/\/\/\/\/\-]
[-2-2-2-2---2-2---2-2-2-2---2-2----2-2----------------]

I promise you I genuinely wrote and play this and it's actually easier than you'd think.
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Odd times can still groove ... Pantera are a prime example of that.

This is a song from my band's debut album that has many weird time signatures:

(Well, I think the song rocks, at any rate :) )

I can see where you are coming from there.
Actually in guitar pro it sounds more like a demented surf tune.
I should probably mention its actually a 10-bar blues (my mistake).

I'm quite fond of my odd time signatures by the way.

Oh don't get me wrong some of my favorite tunes have odd time sigs in them, I love it, it's just that you can't headbang to a 3/4 4/4 rhythm line, you'll have to snap your neck in the middle of the bar which I don't love so much. :(

btw nice stuff!

I think this has to be one of my faves from the CD along with gettysburg :D

And to the OP i love odd time signatures but i do agree they are awkward to headbang to
