Tube switch any recommendations
« on: November 16, 2008, 10:02:27 PM »
Well it has to do with my Orange TTs volume I am getting a voltage regulator, but a friend recommended that I switch get new tubes. It has a 12ax7 I think. What is the best brand for good sound and reliability, and long life for tubes??

Now that is a vexed and troubled question - pre amp tubes (including a 12AX7) last a long time - 3-5 years at full tilt.  Poweramp tubes are the fellas that degrade over about 12 months of moderate playing/

As to brands???? - 100 guitarists will give you 100 answers, personally I like the New Sensor 'Mullard' 're-issues'.

get some Mullard, Brimar, GE, RCA, Mazda, Sylvania etc... (i.e. any NOS 12AX7) off ebay and you'll never look back.  With some luck, you should get two or three 12AX7s for the same price as you'll pay for currentproduction stuff.  I'd set a budget of £40 for three NOS 12AX7s - they will sound better than any current production valve and also outlast them many times over.  Bear in mind that I've owned many 60s amps that still had their original valves in and sounded great - hows that for reliability?
