just brought a peavey vyper.....
« on: November 15, 2008, 08:50:58 PM »
i went for the 30w version in the end. i decided the 75 would simply be too loud for bedroom use. the only thing is  the 30 doesnt have a 'powersponge??'. probably a neat feature but apart from that and the wattage they are the same. i chose it over the 15 as it has more effects and also a built in looper (but need the peavey footswitch to use) which the 15 doesnt have.

i havent had a chance to play too much yet but first impressions are that its excellent! theres practically no hum at all (thought the pickups might help lol) its damn loud too! it goes up to 13 on the master, i put it to 6 and struck a chord and it scared the cr@p out of me! theres a massive variety of effects and sounds to be coaxed out and i found some absolutely killer tones in just a few minutes. using the fender twin amp on clean with the fuzz and rotary speaker on it absolutely nails 'castles made of sand' solo. (shame i cant play it lol) very easy to use. it doesnt sound cheap or fake (like my gdec and the spiderjam). it sounds how i want it to sound and actually makes my playing sound a whole lot better too!!

one thing that puts me off (slightly) is the plastic on the front that looks like batmans jumpsuit! it just seems a bit cheap. It doesnt seem as sturdy as the roland cube but to be honest its going to sit on my bedroom floor and never move so its not like its going to be gigged. but it just sounds awesome!

all in all for £150 i think its an absolute steal. the 15w is also good for £90!

if anyones on the market for a decent practice amp they are well worth checking out!

I've been seriously looking at these and it's nice to have someone on here finally say something about them.

I'm going to go see if i can try one out sometime, i hope the PMT in leeds has got them in stock, they should do...

I must admit the flashy lights attract me to it too, haha :D

I wonder if the master cranked and the power sponge in use makes a difference on a solid state amp... i HAVE heard that it can, something about 'hitting the rails' or some such.

the guy in the shop did say the powersponge comes into its own at higher volumes but its only for home use so i decided its not worth it for me!  the 75 is WAY too loud for home use i think the 30 is too tbh! its worth noting the robustness of the amps if your looking at gigging. they sound amazing but not as solid as i would like. for home use its fine but the plastic dials seem a bit cheap and i think you would have to be very very careful if you were hauling it around! just my opinion

i jammed for 4 hours lastnight :D

Cool, I'm seriously looking at getting one next month. Did you get a floor board?

They do look good for the money. 20 years ago I paid 160 for a Peavey Backstage and that was just two channels and reverb, so top buy!
