Brown sound

Out of the contemporary pickups, which would be most capable at delivering that Van Halen tone at a lower gain and which would sound closest to a souped up hotter VHII?

Because the VHII is quite unique in the BKP catalogue, being that it's Asymmetrically scatterwound i think you'd probably be best asking tim to wind a custom VHII for you...

I don't think any other BKP's are Asymmetrically scatterwound, i may be wrong though.

The VHII is definitely my fave pickup though from the BKP range!

see I always want one, yet i always have that feeling in the back of my head that It wouldnt pack enough power to push really extreme genres or get that clear Vai like tone either.......I imagine it having an amazing tone but I don;t know if it would deliver everything, would it take a pedal like the metal muff to push it? and how would that sound? thanks

i thought they were all asymmetrically scatterwound to a certain degree?! but believe the VH2 is indeed unique as it is wound with the thicker PAF type wire, different to the other vintage hot/contemporary.

i'm sure someone else will come in now with the real facts ;)

I believe the VHII has the most difference between coils (though I think the RY has a decent offset too).  Black Dogs use a special wire gauge, as do Emeralds, Nailbombs and Crawlers, though they don't all use the same guage.  I thought there was a humbucker that used Formvar wire too, but I can't remember which one.
So many pickups, so little time

I thought that most were asymetrical too, I am pretty sure the MM has quite an offset, and I read that the Rebel Yell has one vintage style coil and one contemporary :?

i suppose this discussion wasn't very helpful ;)

for vh2/les paul clips hunter has made some amazing ones in the players forum. they seem to be a good match.

You could try getting a VHII and a clean boost pedal, or just turning the level up on your OD if you use one.
