BKP's with PAF gain and dynamics
« on: December 16, 2008, 02:25:08 PM »
Hello. The mule is very dynamic in it's response and that's a good thing, but how are the stormy mondays, riff raffs, VH2 and the black dogs in comparison? My friend needs a set of humbuckers with gain in the PAF territory but need a little more compressed sound. What options does he have? :?

vh2 or black dog for your friend then from that list.

the other are about the same compression level as the mule, maybe a bit less in the case of the stormy monday.

VHIIs aren't that compressed to my ears.  I'd say Black Dog as it's quite a heavy wind on the coils.

Don't need to be supercompressed. Would you say VHII's are slightly more compressed than Mules? I think his Les Paul Classic is too dark for the black dogs. He is using a Fender DRRI which is very dynamic unless you turn up the volyme near max.

Hard to say really.  VHIIs have a stronger AV magnet than the AIV Mule, but more unbalanced coils.  I would say they weren't more compressed.

Most BKPs are pretty open, and the guitar itself can have a big effect.  If you want a bit more compression you want something like an overwound Mule.  This is why I suggested the Black Dog, but maybe you could ask Tim if he can wind something special?

Rebel Yell might be a good alternative, compressed Bridge, open Neck.

Black Dog in a dark guitar -> I wouldn't really recommend.

How about the Abraxas? AIV magnets and a hotter wind than the Mule. I'm seriously wanting some, but don't have a guitar to put them in...

I'm not a fan of the Rebel Yell, I found it to be too 80s sounding in all 3 guitars I tried it in (basswood charvel, ash strat and all-mahogany LP).. Got quite a lot of mids which is great for lead playing but I found it too congested sounding for rhythm, if that makes any sense..

Abraxas seems like a good choice from what I've read about it on here. When I tried one ages ago, it sounded much smoother than the VHIIs, which had a nice middy crunch from what I remember.

Ok, if you think a Les Paul in a deluxe reverb RI, any suggestions on what pickup would work best for a crunchy rock n roll sound?

I would say the VH2 is more dynamic than the mule in my opinion it's asymetrical wind gives this really dynamic and quick response it drives the amp harder thats for sure but I think it's deffinatly more dynamic.

The Black Dog would be my suggestion.
