Bareknuckle pickups for my ALL MAPLE Guitar!!
« on: December 26, 2008, 03:57:23 AM »
I need some suggestions for my current guitar. Here are the specs
1)bolt-on maple neck/maple fingerboard
2)soft maple body
3)Chrome floyd rose
4)Chrome hardware

the nature of this guitar is thin/trebly sound!
the pickups in this guitar currently are duncan lil 59 in the neck and SUHR Aldrich in the bridge.
This guitar is my #1.. i'm planning to get bareknuckle pickups for it.

The sound i am looking for is (for reference)
Bridge(distorted)
1)John Petrucci- Suspended animation/Images and words
2)Van Halen- Balance, For unlawful carnal Knowledge

Neck(distorted)
1)John Petrucci- Suspended animation/imagese and words
2)Robert Marcello- Danger Danger/Roland demo's
3)steve vai-For the love of God

Any suggestions on what bareknuckle pickups would work well in this guitar and get the sounds i want?

thanks

I've had lots of all maple guitars, and none of them were thin/overly bright.

If the guitar really sounds that way ... you're not gonna get it to sound good easily. I would sell it and get something that better suits your needs. Using pickups as band aids is  BAAAAAAD IDEA.

Judging from the sounds you are looking for, I would use a basswood guitar with either Holy Diver or Nailbomb pups.

I was going to recommend the holy diver, but I guess the suhr aldrich is similar voiced (since both can sound very close to his tone, have similar outputs and the aldrich pickup description sounds like a nailbomb)  :? :? :?

the holy diver is meatier

maybe you might like the miracle man NECK version in both positions
the are kinda similar to the holy diver, but even fatter with less top end
gets a bit nasal in mahogany, but for maple it might be a good idea

in my experience soft maple is an awkward tone wood to find pickups for. i'm saying miracle men, or (controversially) EMGs. or new guitar as denim'n'leather says.

if you are going for EMG make sure it is not 81 or 60 as it will probably sound very trebly. go for alnico ones for a smoother and more midrange tone.

does bareknuckle make any hum canceling single coils?

No. but the pickups are well potted and seem to hum a lot less than the stock pickups they replace.
Mississippi Queens, Holydiver.

I remember reading in another topic for an all-maple guitar that the holy diver might not be the best choise. Reason: it might get too congested in the mids, of which the holy diver has a lot of.

Maple is often thought as a very bright wood (well, maybe the guitar of the topic actually is), but it's actually very midrangy. It tightens the lows..AND it does the same thing to highs. It tightens them.

However, the attack of maple is tight and snappy. I have never owned an all-maple guitar, but I can imagine that the attack is very tight :)

the highs of soft and hard maple are very similar, but the risk with soft maple is a rather big and dull bass response. they are quite different timbers in fact. of course it depends on the bit of wood itself, but i found other people on the internet with a similar experience to me.

in an all hard maple guitar i've found you can get great tone with almost any ceramic pickup.

i realised when thinking about this problem that you could go for a new body perhaps.. and keep the nice neck and hardware of the #1 guitar :)

the floyd will bleed off some bass, which may affect things

For what its worth, in the BKP range would go with Miracle Man or Stormy Monday (or possibly the Mule).
