any good Amp modeling/simulation w/headphones!
« on: December 26, 2008, 04:08:19 AM »
I just got the neighbor's complaining again.. so i am looking for
something small and compact to use at home with good headphones.
So i am pretty much selling all my amps and just using an amp simulator unit
w/headphones with my guitar for home use.
any suggestions?

Try putting the amp somewhere else first. All these modelling solution IMO are not as nice or useful.
I would try:

Open combo
- Putting the amp in a different room and facing a different wall with its back
- Putting it on some chair or something so that it doesn't resonate with floor and wall - especially useful in wooden houses

Amp heads
- smaller cabs with speakers with lower sensitivity rating

General
- Play at times when the neighbor is not at home, or next to rooms he is not in when you are playing (e.g. play above his bedroom but before 10pm)

Other than that, you are allowed to practice during the day at reasonable volume. Tell him that next time.

Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Hi,

Nice post alex.
What type of amp have you got at the moment.  If it was a valve amp would a attenuator help or solve the problem?   Do you think it is loud when you play?  What times of day do you play?

i don't agree with alex... amp simulations are THE solution for home practice... don't sell anything because you'll need your amp to play live, after all...
many professional bands are using axe-fx directly through the mixer for serious live situations, but it's a really expehensive piece of hardware, so i suggest you a simple, nice and cheap Line6 PODxt or PODx3... with a bit of tweaking you can get many great sounds from those things, and discover the pleasure of playing with full gain whenever you want... you can use directly headphones or listen to it through your PC, to play on mp3s... it definitely changed my life, some year ago!
if you want to do some home recording it's way better than trying to mic amps played at minimum volume, and at least you know EXACTLY how guitars will sound like in the mix!

my neighbour stamps on the floor (I live in a downstairs flat) but I rarely play very loud and its never at unsociable hours (after 12pm and before 9pm).

last time my neighbour knocked was when my girlfriend was playing some music in the living room - I told them I didn't consider it loud AND it was early evening (5 or 6pm).

the biggest complainers are usually the biggest offenders - my neighbour stomps round like a bloody elephant and I don't say peep, there has to be some give and take when you have neighbours.

Move house...

Other than that, I agree, they should have some idea that you will have an hour a day at proper volume

i almost forgot... there's the death metal alternative... go upstairs and kill the neighbor, then continue playing at full volume while bathing in in his blood.

Carl Martin Rock Bug looks great. Plug guitar in one end, headphones other, & play along to MP3 if you like.
