Another Stairway recording with BlackDogs

Righty, actually my first clip ever posted here was Stairway to heaven Solo with the Epi, in the old days it was recorded with a Tonelab SE (which I sold recently).

This is the same Epiphone Les Paul which is now loaded with Black Dogs again (meanwhile it had RebelYells and also a MiracleMan for some weeks).

Amp wise it's the Axe FX played through power section of Bogner Shiva into ported 2x12 with a G12-65 Heritage, mic'ed with a single SM57. In the Axe I used Plexi 1 with pretty much everything modded (Damping, Transformer, LowFreq etc) and boosted with a FET Boost.

I added after the recording a bit of reverb and delay in Logic Audio.

the lead tone is almost nice, the rhythm is pretty bad... just has a flat boomy feeling.

While I wouldn't be as harsh as Spitfire, it does sound a bit 'flat'?  Not as sparkly as your usual work Mr Hunter  :)

im not trying to be harsh, its just my thoughts. but their is quite a bit of lets not say anything negative going on around here.. 

dont get me wrong, its far from being cr@p.. but at the same time i couldnt say its good.  just  my opinion

I think it's all about the lead tone here - sounds like the boomy chords are part of the same take to me, is that right Hunter? (Or did you guys mean the backing track itself? - I might be getting confused, I'm meant to be cooking the wife's dinner :lol:)

I actually rather like that tone - I nearly got Black Dogs originally. I love my Mules now I've got used to them, but it sounds like Black Dogs would not have been wrong...

Nice feel as well Hunter - I don't usually listen to these clips twice, but I did this one.

(By the way... I'm studiously ignoring any personal interest I might be having in looking into AxeFX :lol:)

Was one take indeed. It's good to get this kind of feedback. While I was tweaking the tones and mic position etc, I was most busy dialing out presence and treble, as it's my usual "wrong" to have too much of it. Maybe I went too far and made it dull in the end.

Also mastering on powerbook internal speakers is not such a good idea probably :O)

Do you turn AFX poweramp off to go through your Bogner?

I do agree the rythme wasn't as good as the lead, and as you say mastering is probably the issue
