Has anyone on here got one? I was consedring giving the Romany or the Plexi Seven some consideration? Anyone got any opinions on these two models?

I have a Romany Plus and it's amazing. No gain control, just lovely fendery valve OD from the volume knob,
& real sweet reverb. Almost no clean headroom on the 1/4w setting, which is a good thing, as you can get
great natural overdriven tones at bedroom volume. Breaks up much later at 10w if cleans are your thing. Perfect
bedroom amp, but probably not loud enough to keep up with a drummer. Don't get me wrong though, it's
still pretty damn loud. Well worth a try. I haven't tried a Plexi 7, but I've heard nothing but good things about
them, considering one myself to go with the Romany.

i've only tried the romany plus... it was awesome. assuming you like a fendery-style tone, of course.

well worth a try, i'd have thought. :)

Yep - fendery style tone is my thing. Currently have a Laney and like it a lot but have been thinking about an amp change for a while.

Hi Ian,

I have a romany too.  Great little amp unforunatly for me mine is the model with no Reverb.  If you do opt for a Romany I think it would be well worth paying the extra and geting the reverb model.  I keep hoping someone will get the plexi 7 would be very intrested to here just how good that one is.

I have a Plexi Seven and I utterly love it.  It's not for those who want a traditional clean Fender tone and overdrive is certainly where its best noises lie.  I was after an amp that could deliver Robin Trower and early Van Halen type tones and the Plexi Seven has both nailed.  I have a Charvel EVH and a Fender Strat and the amp handles both with aplomb; each guitar's personality really shines through.

When I bought it I found that even on the quarter watt setting it was too loud for my flat and I e-mailed Dennis to ask his opinion on attenuators.  Instead of suggesting an attenuator he invited me down to his workshop and modified the amp for me so that it overdrives at a lower volume.  He did this for free and on a Saturday morning.  Not only that, he then ran me back to the station.  I cannot say enough good things about Dennis Cornell and his amazing amps; he's a scholar and a gent.

There are a few photos of my Plexi Seven here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_atrocity/sets/72157605903622089/ so you can get an idea of how small it is.

Great story, Andrew, and the amp looks awesome in that colour!

I'm surprised it was too loud at 1/4 watt, I must ask for a similar mod if I ever get round to buying one (I have been sort-of considering it for some time).
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I explained to Dennis that I was probably his worst case scenario customer: I want to drive the power stage (volume up to at least 7 or 8 ) and I live in a small flat in central London with a very tolerant but not that tolerant girlfriend.  The amp is really pretty loud given the wattage.

By the way I don't think Dennis can make the amp in that red covering anymore as he had a limited supply of the fabric.  His new amp for Robin Trower (a 100 watt monster) is covered in red Tolex though, so you could always ask for that!

Oh well, I like some his other colours like green, blue, even lilac!

Mentioning Robin Trower - my favourite player - in connection with Cornell amps isn't helping my GAS!

that plexi 7 does look sweet in red. :)

arg... current GAS seems to be for a cornford carrera (i got to try one, finally!) coupled with a cornell romany plus (as the cornford doesn't do the fendery thing, or, er, even the clean thing, all that well)... and i wouldn't mind trying a plexi either. and then martamps always look good, and are good value too...

not good.

very nice indeed, but it's currently kinda sitting in between "very nice" and "i gotta have that", so i'm still not completely decided on it. plus i have a sneaking suspicion that i liked the hurricane slightly more (which could be academic if i can't get it loud enough to where it sounds at its best), but i'd ideally need to try the two head to head. th swappable valves in the carrera is a cool idea, but to be honest i think i prefer the el 84 90% of the time, and the reverb, while useful, wasn't amazing, so getting to try the harley wouldn't hurt either...

also, there's always that doubt that it doesn't do anything that my engl doesn't...

obviously best-case scenario is just to somehow find some magic room with every current production low-wattage tube amp...

i was actually pretty happy, i went down to belfast last week just on a whim to try some stuff, and a local shop had one in second hand. i went down again today to try it... :D

You can see a pic of my Plexi Seven here,
http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=5209.885

I love it but I would recommend you try one before buying (as I would with almost anything).

The reduced wattage settings are useful but IMO the 7w setting has the best tone. I use an EH LPB if I want a bit 'more' but as I'm not into Metal, the pushed-clean sounds suit me. Tone is very subjective but I would describe the basic clean sounds as Beano-Clapton. The higher-gain sounds are pure 70s rock.

I got the Plexi as my other amp is a 60w valve Fender (which I used at gigs).
