Mississippi Queen in SG Supreme
« on: December 06, 2008, 12:27:41 PM »
Hi All,
I have an SG Supreme with 57 Classics.
A few years ago I used to have an SG Standard in which I fitted Kent Armstrong Humbucker sized P90's & I really liked the tone.
However I had to sell the Guitar on a while ago.

I am now contemplating a similar mod to my SG Supreme, was contemplating Gibson P94's mainly cos I like the look of the Black pickups with the gold surround but they are basically unobtainable in the UK at present.
So thought I would consider buying British instead!! and go with a matched pair of Mississippi Quens with one RPRW.

Anyone else done a similar mod on their SG?

Were you happy with the results?
Cheers
Ian

Hello Ian ,  :)

That's a very nice guitar you have there !

I fitted a matched set of Missisipi Queens to my '76 S.G. Standard - and was very  happy with the result ; both in sound  and the aesthetics. A gold set would look stunning in yours.

They only 'moved' because I wanted to try them in a 335 copy, and my AIV Stormy Mondays in the S.G.  On balance,  I would say that ( considering the Stormys as a smoother '57 classic ) - the M.Q.s cover more bases, including those covered by the S.M.s - whilst recovering the muscular character of an S.G.  if needed  :)

Nice one , :) I'm sure you will be happy with the sound - and when you have had the pickup screws sitting accross the centre of the pickup for a while, standard humbuckers look very strange !

It is perhaps worth noting that this more 'neutral' alignment of the pickup screws makes the bridge and neck pickups sound a bit more more like each other ( in a subtle way ) - but to my ears, this 'contrasting' of tone,  instead of stark opposites, gives a more elegant sound / feel to the whole thing.  A 'Rolls Royce' of sounds to go with the Rolls Royce of S.Gs ...  8)

Brilliant !

I am happy you came back to us and reported on the outcome Ian . I'm obviously pleased that you like them - as in the end it always comes down to personal taste e.t.c.

What would you say their sound qualities and attributes are for you ? It is always interesting to get someone else's perspective.   :)

Enjoy !

I particularly like the openess of the tone when played clean thru both my Carvin Legacy & X100B, especially with the neck pickup.

Wasn't sure how it would turn out as the Supreme has a maple top whereas the Standard that I fitted the Kent Armstrong P90's to is all Mahogany,  but I really like the tone all round.
There really is not a great deal of difference in the output compared to the Gibson buckers and it's easily compenasted for with my amps.

Dialled with a relatively low gain settin the Bridge pickup breaks up the lead channel on my X100B beautifully when digging in a tad with the pick. And "Sabbath" like tones are easily had! :D
Also no hum in the mid pos.....to be honest there doesn't seem to be a lot of hum in the other 2 positions either.

What's more... I think it looks way cooler!!! :P
