NPAD (new power amp day)
« on: February 15, 2009, 12:53:57 PM »
New Power Amp Day  :D

Thanks to Hunter's tip off about the good deal on the VHT 2/90/2 at Guitar Guitar I went down to the shop yesterday & tried one out with my Boss GT6.  It sounds mint in stereo.   :D  So now I'm off to rewire my cab for stereo/mono operation.

I've been looking at getting a rack-mounted setup to, that VHT does look good, but as always, clips are needed, as i'm curious to hear the GT-6 used as a preamp as well.

Sweet choice. What the 2502 is for rock is the 2902 for metal!

I am using Class A quite a bit, but I never push that "voice" button, it, it's just too over the top. How do you set up the VHT?

By the way, I recommend to check the bias. I did mine when I received it and it was set at 45 with EL34s on a 475V plate voltage. Way too hot. I have now put them at 33mA, bit on the colder side as I like it.

It's sounding really good.  I've not had it on really loud yet as I only finished rewiring my cab at about 10pm last night.  Got a band practise tonight though, so it'll get a full work out then :D  At the lower volume I'm preferring the sound with the voice button push in.  It just sounds clearer.

I don't really know anything about bias.  I leave things like that alone for the fear or blowing things up.  LOL

My set up is nice and simple now.  :)  guitar>GT6>poweramp>cab.  I was quite amazed how much more 3D simple things like reverb sound when running in stereo.

I'll try & get some clips done tomorrow night.  :)

Cool.

If you ever think about biasing it, here is a description on how it's done on the 2502 (I guess 2902 is the same).

If they are biased wrong, it can eat tubes.

Cool, cheers for the link.  What's the fan like in your 2502?  It's pretty loud in the 2902.  The half speed switch helps a bit, but it's still quite loud.

I have no half speed switch. However I have a PAPST 8880N on order. That has the same specs as mine but does 18dB instead of 25 like the Matsushitea one that is in there now. I'll report on what difference it makes.

Nice!

If i was going down the rack route, i'd get a 2/90/2 or 2/50/2, or the black beauty
SG-X/Over wound Rebel Yell
Blue SG 61 Reissue/Cold Sweat
Egnater Mod 50
Matamp 4x12

I have replaced the fan with a PAPST 8880N now. The Papst has less airflow (30m3/h instead of 45m3/h) but it is dead silent. I cannot hear a thing, really I thought it wasn't on in the first place.

Played for extended time last night and the amp didn't get hot. Wonder what it would be like in Class A and full throttle, but that's not gonna happen anyway, I'm more into A/B and I can't play so loud usually.

Decide yourself if you wanna take the risk, for me the papst stays where it is, I will keep watching the temperature.

Cool, thanks for the info.  I'll leave mine stock for now.  I'll worry about changing it  if it's audible on recording.
