Oh dear me.
Revenge for that 47-all-out we had them for in 2004 it would seem ...

Blimey, I turn my back for about three hours and the sky's fallen in.  51/8 - looking classy England, very classy.

Oh, I beg your pardon, 51 all out.  Enough, I'm going to have a drink.

I wonder how those Indian teams who just spent $3,250,000 on three of the England players in that match are feeling right now :-)

^ true, but they also spent quite a bit of money on shah, bopara, etc. who should have been on the team. and petersen is worth the big bucks, at any rate.

yeah, england appear to be in serious trouble.

I said that when they were about 15 for 3. apparently it was an understatement...

Just logged in this morning to find the result - we were 5 down when I last looked on ceefax last night.

I must admit that when I last posted, I did think we were going to lose by an innings at that point, but didn't want to put it in writing, just in case it came true

I was at Lord's for all of the test in 2004 where we did them for 50-odd in the second innings. That was a stunning afternoon... so I can just imagine what it felt like for the Windies and their supporters :D

But dear oh dear!

I'm not convinced it's as bad as all that (once we get over the "it should have been a draw, WTF were you lot doing?!?") - when a team gets rolled over, it really does get rolled over.

That's one of the reasons I prefer Test matches and 4 day county games. It's a big long battle, like a game of chess - it might look boring 2nd session 3rd day or whatever, but there's this titanic mental struggle going on... and when one side gets the upper hand and starts causing real damage, the other side might well throw down their weapons and run away, just like a real battle...

Luckily it's not a real battle though, and it's only mental scars/injuries...

I assume there's going to be some sort of witch hunt now, in the media and on the web, if nothing else...

How long's this series? I reckon there's a real possibility they might roll us in another innings before we start getting a grip again. I personally don't want us ditching Cook, Bell, etc, before we've been through that though - if they come through this patch they'll be brilliant, and if they don't we can drop them then. If we drop them now, they'll never reach their potential (which I believe is huge), and there's no guarantee that anyone else will do better... (this sort of stuff rubs off mentally on the guys who weren't playing as well).

Now I have recovered from the shock, I agree Andy. It is a 4 test / 5 ODI series - I would imagine we'll stick (and should stick) with pretty much the same side next test. These sort of things do happen in cricket, once you start sliding the new batsmen get nervous and the bowling side gets more and more aggressive. I didn't see the footage but I imagine they had 4 slips and a gully in permanently for the quicks, and crowded the bat when Benn was bowling.

Like you say what matters now is a good recovery from England. Bouncing back will give the side confidence, where as failing again could ruin some of the players, I imagine the selectors will be lining up a new side for the 3rd Test if we lose the 2nd one though ...

But it is all part of the ups and down of the long format of the sport - some of the greatest sporting battles have been fought on the square of a cricket pitch over days, both mentally and psychically. No other sport has that, and its why I love cicket! :-)

"psychic ball-tampering..."

Perhaps that was what gave us the "reverse swing" edge back 4 years ago, nothing to do with the sweeties in Tresco's pocket after all??

i don't agree that we should stick with the same side. At least a couple of players should have been selected for this first game, if you ask me. shah and bopara deserve their shot (how many chances has strauss had, for example? last winter in NZ he was apparently on his last chance, now he's captain, WTF?), and that's before you even consider guys like mascarenhas (no idea how to spell that  ), samit patel etc. who have done nothing wrong, yet are dropped and/or forgotten for guys who have.

I also agree that there'll be a witch-hunt, which i don't agree with. Apart from anything, they always settle on the wrong targets (and the more i see it, the more i think it's not incompetence, it's actually intentional- politics etc.)- everyone's calling for bell's head, what about cook? he's utter cr@p, he takes about 4 hours to get to about 40, tries to speed up (which he apparently can't do) then gets out for about 50. bell at least looks like he's trying to score runs- with cook you're on a negative footing before you even start.

don't even get me started on the witch-hunt about monty. the batsmen get chance upon chance, and if the bowlers have one bad match, they're out on their ear. maybe monty would have taken 5 wickets if he'd been bowling against the england batsmen...
