Middle SC for Ibanez JS
« on: January 30, 2009, 10:38:38 PM »
So, I put the DiMarzio FRED and PAF Joe in my JS100 (had the VH2s, decided they didn't deliver the right sound; too vintageish and not Satch enough) and I'm intent on routing out space for a middle SC. I can do this easily, what's more of a dilemma will be choosing the pickup.
I'm after a hot Strat type sound from it; something that will deliver an approximation of the Robin Trower middle position sound, but fatter and hotter. I like midrange in a single coil, and a good mixed position sound with the FRED/Joe combo. I'm not overly familiar with the BKP catalogue, especially not the singlecoils, but I'm guessing, from the site that the Slowhand will deliver the midrange I like. Am I right here?

Also, as an afterthought, in the not particularly near future I'm going to build a partscaster type SG; any thoughts on a pickup that will be fat, smooth and thick but with some upper midrange bark, that won't lose clarity under high gain in a korina body?

Thanks.

... I guess that's all I really joined for :p
I'll mope around for a bit and see what's going on.

I'm not overly sure about the single coils, but a partcaster SG? a bolt-on SG?!

For an SG the usual suggestion is Riff Raffs for low output or Warpigs for high.

Actually, maybe the slowhand would be a good middle coil for you?

Well, maybe a bolt on SG. I'm fairly handy with glue and woodworking things, so it's not out of the question to enlarge the neck pocket to accomodate a set neck, and be honest, the fact that it'd be korina would make up for the neck joint; korina is just brilliant. I was also considering simply buying the new Ibanez Destroyer as the old Destroyers are absolutely my favourite guitars ever, and replacing the pickups, but I'd probably still use the same pickups as I would for the SG.
I'd looked at the Slowhand, and it did look pretty perfect. Just wondering if there was a better option for my requirements.
