Thick, fat, smooth hard rock pickup
« on: February 03, 2009, 10:28:54 PM »
I briefly mentioned this in the thread regarding the middle single coil I intend to rout my Ibanez for, but seeing as it's a complete different affair and as I've pretty much made up my mind on that (Slowhand), I think it warrants its own thread.
I am very shortly going to be able to afford a new guitar, and it's most likely to be either the new Ibanez Destroyer or a vintage Destroyer II. I'm pretty damn sure I won't like the pickups in either; the D-Activators in the new model are too metal for my tastes (and, judging from DiMarzios experiences with double blade magnets, cr@p) and the pickups in the old model are probably not going to be anything special.
I'm looking for a pair of hard rock (think about the same output as a DiMarzio FRED or Breed) humbuckers that will be very fat and thick, have strong harmonic response and an upper midrange bark that's not harsh and trebly, all in the context of a predominantly mahogany body (though the new Destroyer has a maple through-neck).
Anybody have any reccomendations? Fire away, thanks  :D

That would be a Nailbomb set for you sir!

Maybe you want something else for the neck but a Nailbomb bridge is what you want

Anything tamer than a Nailbomb? I was thinking of a Holy Diver or a Black Dog; how do these stand up against the Nailbomb regarding my tonal preferences?

You could try the HD bridge for the Ibanez. The neck pickup is something very different which might or might not suit the guitar.

If you want a thick, fluid and smooth neck tone with strong, rounded bass response you need a Rebel Yell (it's a mix of the Cold Sweat and VH2).

All of this also depends on your set-up and the way you play. The Black Dog bridge is lower output, but still rocks like a mofo (more in a classic way, it has a great blues/hardrock tone).

In that case, the Holy Diver/Rebel Yell combination sounds absolutely perfect. Should I have either or both of them covered to smooth the tone, or will that not be an issue? What would be the main effects if I did have them covered?

As for my set up, I play my guitars through an MXR 10 band EQ (and after I've got my new amp and guitar, a wah and chorus) into a Peavey Valveking 212 with Celestion Vintage 30 and G12T-75 speakers (although considering a Cornford Roadhouse just about as soon as I have the Destroyer).
As for the way I play, the most significant details I can think of is that I have a mind-numbingly average pick attack, achieve speed mostly through legato and push up the gain and mids on my amp to try and achieve a smooth but saturated overdrive tone. This have any bearing on my pickup choice?

Yep, it is a perfect combo to my opinion. There are other people that have a Cold Sweat neck and Holydiver bridge with great results, but I think the Rebel Yell neck is better on the clean channel (since it's a mix of the VH2 and Cold Sweat). The Rebel Yell neck is bigger and meatier, while the Cold Sweat might be a bit smoother/more fluid (but less great on the cleans). You can still shred with the Rebel Yell.

I'd choose to have them both covered (nickel covers) for your Ibanez.

That's absolutely brilliant, thanks.
Just a hundred or so pounds and I'll be able to afford the Ibanez; awesome.

I'd say for a mahogany body you need a ceramic magnet to cut through it so go with a Cold Sweat set. It's what Tim suggested for my mahogany bodied guitar and I have no regrets at all.
