Modern Thrashy 7 string pickup advice?
« on: February 17, 2009, 07:40:52 AM »
What do you guys think would be best for a modern thrashy 7 string set? Think older Meshuggah, Jeff Loomis (Nevermore), Rusty Cooley.... fast heavy staccato low rhythms on a 7 string... lowest note either Bb or Ab, but also lots of neoclassical/shred kinda lead playing..... Is the CWP hotter than the MM? Does it have less treble than the MM? Keep in mind, this is coming from someone who likes the sound of the EMG 707 but also the sound of bands like Meshuggah... I'm just thinking about going with passives to allow me coil spitting options for clean playing.

Tim's MM clip from a long time ago kinda reminds me of Jeff Loomis' sound and style of playing, so I think that might be a good fit.... very tight and clear, but nice lead tone too.... CWP seems interesting too though, although I've heard it's a little darker/smoother sounding, is that right?

The MM Will certainly cover the Jeff Loomis tone, what guitar are you using? and what woods is it made from?

For the alder, i'd have to agree with Eric for the Painkiller, the MM i have is awesome in a mahogany LP, but i have heard that the PK is really tight and defined, and it was recommended to me for my RG by Tim for similar tones to the ones that you are after.

But isn't the Painkiller a brighter pickup overall? more high middy? I don't think I've ever heard any clips of it doing leads either

Also, I forgot to mention, the neck pickup will be slanted like this:

Do you think that would be a problem... maybe make the neck pickup too bright?

With the slanted neck pickup, it would make it slightly more trebly, but i shouldn't think that would be too much of a problem, lots of players like the Nailbomb7, cold Sweat7 combo (in bridge and neck respectively), but as always i'm going to recommend that you call Tim as noone knows his pickups better than him. also he may be able to wind a neck p/up for the slanted position so that it is less trebly.
