Strat HSS - Need Suggestions...
« on: February 24, 2009, 03:39:40 PM »
Hello everyone,

I've got a Warmoth Stratocaster ( alder body, all maple neck), I really love this guitar but my actual pickups configuration, a Mother's Milk set, doesn't give me the sound I need and I'm looking for...

I had installed a Mother's Milk set because I like the vintage strat tone but I don't really use this guitar with my band and I would like now to have a more modern and powerfull sound. With my band we're playing songs from Garbage, Skunk Anansie, Baby Animals,..., and I also like to play a lot of stuffs of Extreme, Nuno Bettencourt, Richie Kotzen, SRV, Richie Sambora...
I'm looking for a big strat tone on the neck and middle position and a humbucker with a great hard rock sound but not too dark and "metal".

The Rebell Yell with two Irish tour looks maybe to be a good option but I would like to know if someone has already tested one in a Strat.

I was also thinking about an Abraxas or a Crawler with two Irish Tour...

Thanks for your help.

There aren't many Abraxas users I don't believe, but for the single coil rock I think ITs would be good. One sec while I look up some previous posts.

Hope this helps in your own decision as I've not that much experience with the pickups you ask about or even the genres. But anyways.. at least it's a reply.

Thanks for your help Jonny.

I think I'm going to try the Rebel Yell with 2  Irish Tour or maybe 2 Mother's Milk...

I have a strat with RY & 2 Mother's Milks.  It is a rosewood fingerboard and so is going to be slightly mellower than your maple neck.  It will do the lighter things you are looking for, but for the SRV, Extreme and Richie Sambora, I think you would be better with a Crawler in the bridge.  Also the Rebel Yell might be a bit bright with the maple neck.

So many pickups, so little time

  • Crawler and Irish Tours. First choice for tone!

I have a strat with a crawler and irish tours, and they complement perfectly.

If your looking for creamy tone that can turn itself to anything, then I would definitely recommend them. Great for both vintage and modern tones.

Thank you everyone for your help. The Crawler looks to be the best choice for the kind of sound I'm looking for. Tim has also suggested me that pickup.

I'm now hesitating between a Crawler with 2 mother's milk or a Crawler with 2 Irish Tour...

I'm mathematically looking at this, since you're going for the Crawler over the Rebel Yell and from Phil's comment about it being brighter if you went for the Rebel Yell, I'm assuming the Irish Tour would suit you better. I'm only assuming the Mother's Milk and the Irish Tour will be the same as the comparsion with the Rebel Yell and the Crawler.

But ask Tim, lol..
