splitting Miracle Men?
« on: March 11, 2009, 01:52:35 PM »
i'm waiting for my new MM set to arrive... i took them with 4 conductor wires in order to split them with a miniswitch...
i read almost everywhere that they're very compressed, that they've got just passable cleans and that lowering the volume doesn't work too well with them...
has anyone got some experience with split MMs? how do they sound like?
and has my perverse idea to swap the volume pot for a simple on-off switch got any sense?

Well essential the on/off switch is volume but it's just not variable. If you don't do volume swells or like to turn it down to cut some gain and get some clean crunch (or whatever it's described as) going then I don't see it as an absurd idea.

To be honest, an absurd idea would be me wanting to have a keyhole for my guitar, which rotates a metal plate to connect the jackplate so essentially it turns the guitar on.

Now that's absurd, but $%&#ing awesome as an idea. :D

uhm... not a bad idea, after all...  :)
i DO use the volume knob a lot, but i was just wondering if i'll use it with MMs to adjust input gain... if they don't clean up well with volume i could save the hole for a killswitch!

The don't clean up that well with volume change, but it does change the sound. You can get quite a bright crunch with them lowered. And the split takes a little bit off of the compression

what about parallel? doesn't make the cleans amazing, but it's a pretty big improvement.

That is an awesome idea. If anyone stole the guitar they couldn't use it without dismantling the key mechanism. Not very practical but awesome none the less. Not to mention how awesome it would look to "crank up" your guitar.

You might as well make the pickup selector a min gear shift stick.

Anyway about the MM, I have one in my Les Paul and it doesn't do cleans to well, but it does sound decent in the middle position for cleans. I'm sure coil splitting would help.

If it were me I'd keep the volume knob, and make it a push/pull switch for splitting.
