Straplocks for Sg style guitars?
« on: April 04, 2009, 09:37:53 PM »
Just a quicky, I'm looking for straplocks for my Hagstrom. The strap pin is on the back of the guitar like a SG, but it isn't neck heavy. What type of straplock is cool for this style? Not sure if my usual Schaller cups would be super effective, not wanting to poke myself with the ball end of it.

What do you SG/explorer/flying V types use? And yes i do need them, energetic stage moves demand my baby needs to be protected.

I would use Dunlop in that case.
Either that or fashion a little strap extender out of leather with one end a dunlop to go to the body, and the other end with a Schaller so to use the same strap... and not have the guitar too high

Whilst I still played a style(s)  that  required moving around , I was very happy with the Schallers.   Locked on solid, but of course quick to release when you wanted them to, leaving a relatively 'normal' looking guitar strap pin on the instrument itself.   " Lock'n'load" ...  8)

I use Schallers on my SG and although I was sceptical at first (thought it would poke me), I never had a problem with the ball end. If I don't look down, I don't even know it's there   :D  Though I understand your concern. I thought it would be unbearable  :)

When my SG was my main guitar i used to use the little black plastic straplocks, and they worked a treat (and are about 2 quid!!) ;-)

I use these on most of my guitars now. I used to have proper ones, Dunlop style and Schaller but these 2 quid ones have lasted me ages and are just as reliable as their more expensive counterparts.

They certainly are-unfortunately they dont work as well on my Mavericks due to the 'wacky' design.

Schallers are fine - they don't poke and they don't get in the way of your hand either, because your thumb can go under the end of the strap.  I guess the same would be true of Dunlops.

Try it and see how you get on.  :)

When ever I see straplock threads, I almost feel too embarrassed to contribute... but the time has come...

I used to use Schaller many years ago, but found them an absolute pain in the @rse. (I found that after a while they didn't rotate freely on their buttons, they get stuck trying to get them off mid gig, they rattle like buggery,  they chew up your guitar lead, and... HORROR! ...ever had the nut undo on the strap during a gig?? )

I remembered back to the good old days when bread (Mother's Pride, etc) used to have those little plastic things that held the bag shut, instead of sticky-tape... and we used to use those to keep our straps secure... why did bakeries ever stop using free straplocks to secure their bags? :(

And then I found strimmer blades in the early 90s...

Not sure what make they were, but they were something akin to these:

http://www.gardencentreonline.co.uk/Garden-Accessories-Mower-and-Strimmer-Blades-Mower-Blades-Fits-leading-brands/1345-PD/default.html

Cut the blade off, then put the holey bit over your strap-button (once the strap is on obviously), and slide it to lock in place...

Absolutely perfect for me...

(I should note, I suppose, that every guitar of mine has its own strap - the only time I have guitar changing trouble is when I buy a new guitar and forget to buy a strap at the same time...)
